I know u can't overdo it, so I wanna make sure I'm doing enough. How much taurine should I be adding to their food daily/weekly? I have 1000mg pills I crush up and 4 ferrets that eat raw.

If I remember correctly, Jennifer splits a 500 mg cap between her four daily.

I use a liquid taurine that I buy online (called "dyna-taurine"- I buy it on harlmen.com). The bottle reads that the cat dose is about 5 millimeters/300 mg of taurine per day. So I would guess-timate that the dose is about the same for ferrets.

ok, so about 250-200 mg/day. Can I get some suggestions on how everyone administers it? I have just been crushing it up and adding mine to soup, but idk if everyone is getting the adequate amount. I just bought this new bottle but I might try the liquid taurine. Thank you miamiferret2 for the website.

Since ferrets need a high fat diet and whole prey is a little low in fat, I give mine each a little strip of chicken skin every night. I sprinkle taurine and eggshell powder on them and give each ferret their piece by hand. Then it's a treat and a bonding experience and I know that each ferret is getting her supplement.

That is a good idea, I have never offered just the skin, I will have to try that!

Bluemoose -- I saw some of ur mouse hunt videos on you tube (at leaset I am pretty sure they were yours). I love that outdoor cage. I have been contemplating adding live mice, I just don't know if I can do it bc I am such a baby and love mice. We used to have a bunch as pets bc I stole them from my science room in 8th grade bc they were gonna be snake food lol.

Lol yeah I did post one of them getting live mice in the outdoor enclosure. I do feel a little bad giving them the mice especially since I raised them myself. But I figured the mice I raised had a better life then the animals I buy pre-killed and the cows, pigs, chickens, ect. that end up in the grocery store. Probably died more humane deaths at the "hands" of my fuzzies too. It's kinda sad but I suppose when you're feeding a carnivore, animals have to die someplace along the way. At least I know my mice were happy during the lives they had

Yea, I am sure if I did it I would get used to and get over it... I told my bf he would have to do it first and let me know how it goes lol. So we might in the near future give it a try, I just don't want them torturing them like our cats do. I mean we live on a couple acres and our cats kill things all the time.

I'm hoping to raise feeder rabbits at some point (they're so expensive to buy) and of course I can't feed those live but neither can I kill them so I told my bf that's his job I knew they had to be good for something

I put the liquid taurine in the soupies twice a day. I also give him Co-Q10 once a day (I cut open a little slit into the soft tabs and out a little in my hand. They love the taste. I lost a ferret to cardiomyopathy so I like to take extra precautions. I buy the 100 mg softgels and I give about 1/3 of a tablet per ferret per day

I know I can't, I too love mice, I hand-reared a wild litter we found too close to rat poison on my husband's boss' place, and you can see my pet Fancy girl in the Other Pets section. Mice have a lot more intelligence than they are given credit for (some of them just as much or more than rats). Do your ferrets like beef heart? My 18 month kitten had some for the first time a few days ago and he completely pigged out! And heart is such an immensely great source of taurine.

Yea I love mice too, I think they're precious, and I'd prob cry. That was the one thing keeping me from being a vet, I can't deal w animals dying I'm a baby ab it. I haven't tried beef heart, I'm not really sure where to get it. I can get beef liver at the grocery abduction chicken liver then gizzards and hearts (mostly gizzards usually ab 2 hearts). I'm going to start ordering from hare today once I start my new job in Feb. So I will try it and see how they like it.

At the grocery stores I go to, beef heart will be in the freezer section along side turkeys, cornish hen, etc.
