Little Neka has been very sneezy today. This morning he started had a big sneeze fit. didn't think too much of it. He has on occasion sneezed when he gets fluff etc his face. But he's still sneezing a fair bit tonight. He seems fine otherwise, still crazy ferret boy.
SO how do i know if it's a cold? How serious can a cold be with ferrets. What things should i watch for?

should just last a few days if it is a cold. make sure he gets plenty of water and is eating. ferrets will usually get over it in a few days. flu can be dangerous though. watch out for mucous coming out of the nose, panting, trouble breathing, green mucous (means infection), extreme lethargy. as long as he is eating etc. then he should be ok. make sure you clean the room that he is in really well. get rid of dust.

Truthfully, it's been explained to me that ferrets cannot contract the rhino virus (common cold), they can get upper respiratory infections (a type of flu virus or a bacteria) Are there any other symptoms other than the sneezing? Lethargy and poor appetite are the common accompaniments to an upper respiratory infection. Sneezing on it's own usually means that one of our little ones has inhaled some fuzz or dustbunnies off the floor. Ciao

Behaviour wise he's normal, unless being extra mischievous is a sign of anything. Like I say with my skin kids, if they are driving you nuts they are not that sick! He's eating fine, like normal i have to hold him or hand feed, cause he doesn't want to stop playing long enough to eat. Breathing seems fine, once he finally fell i sleep, i picked him up for a bit to cuddle and could not hear any wheezing or heavy breathe sounds. just need to dust i guess. (i hope)

It's also quite possible he simply had a hair in his nose. Suki sneezed like a maniac the first couple of months we had her. There was nothing there that the vet could see, but I guess she finally cleared it, because she hasn't sneezed much since.
