So, this time since they've feel full blown raw has been cool. I love them eating like this, and you can see the change in their fur, smell and personalities. The only thing I don't like, this far into the game is chopping their food up so small. I try to get bite sized chunks, or a little bigger for them, because it seems like they just won't eat it if it's any bigger. I mean, they love gizzards-they're already perfect size. But, cutting up turkey necks/chicken necks or other stuff like that with my kitchen shears is a pain. Getting them raw and onto relatively large chunks was easy. Getting them to eat the whole thing without chopping it would be awesome-or at least, not having to chop it as much. What do you guys do in this situation? They at least like their mice whole, but that's about the only thing. I want to be able to give them a slab of meat or a big bunch of something and them sort it out. But at the same time, are they too stubborn to do it themselves, or will they if I just cease to chop it. Opinions?

You can try cutting larger portions and putting large nicks in the flesh, my guys like that. Lets face it because of the poor health of a lot of our furbabies going hungry is not an option. So, pure and simple they're spoiled brats If they were hungry enough they'd eat it. My guys will not eat whole turkey necks, they're just too big and tough. I cut those up. Whole chicken necks, legs and thighs get large deep nicks in them so that they can get hold of the flesh easier. The problem with ferrets is they're a lazy chew, so if you can't pull the meat off easily they stash it that way it will tenderize over time and tastes even better . You can also try smashing it with a hammer (by the way that can get really messy : ....either way it gets tenderized ciao

Cool-well, I'll see if they'll eat it with deep nicks in the flesh. I'll keep on chopping turkey necks. Those are really hard, so I can see how they would have trouble with it. But, I don't mind chopping it so much-they are spoiled very much, and I do want them eating.

Try using a cleaver for the turkey necks. Works like a charm

Two words - Ulu Knife! They are seriously the BEST cutting tool in the world - esp if you have ferrets! They can slice uber thin, delicate slices, thick chunks, skin something perfectly, or chop through bone like a breeze. I can puulverize a bone in leg or wing to be the consistency of coarsely ground meat if I want, or I can simply chop the bones in half. (and mine is even dull!) I HIGHLY recommend getting one. It takes a little getting used to the cutting techniques, but they are the best tools in the world. I really can't even begin to tell you how incredibly awesome they are. If anyone is interested, I can get them really cheap here (it is Alaska after all ) and could probably save you a few $ over buying online. I have paypal so you could just reimburse the shipping and cost of the knife (like $3-4) whatnot that way. PM me if you are interested. Otherwise you can find them all over Ebay and Amazon and google shop and what not.

hey, katt, could those knives cut turkey necks? My guys love the necks, but only in smaller chunks, and no knife I own can saw through them.

hey, katt, could those knives cut turkey necks? My guys love the necks, but only in smaller chunks, and no knife I own can saw through them. Like butter! Well, frozen butter maybe. haha But yes, they cut through turkey necks quite easily! One swift, forceful chop down and voila! Sliced turkey neck! Several more hard, quick chops and you have pulverized turkey neck with all of the yummy marrow just hanging out chopped into the meat and begging to be eaten by little ferret faces! I will see if maybe I can convince Shane to video me chopping things with it tonight. Then I can show you what it does too! haha It is sooo versatile! Most genius cutting tool ever invented! I will need to slice up the Game Hen I get, maybe I will grab some turkey necks for Kenai. I think the ones in my freezer are bad bc they were in the fridge too long. I put them back in the freezer bc I didn't want them to stink up the trash and I didn't feel like walking to the dumpster. Lazy much! My Ulu is very dull, and it still makes quick work of almost every bone I have tried it on. The lamb bones were too hard, but chicken and turkey are a breeze. I vaguely think I have used it on some small beef and pork bones too but I can't remember for sure. It has been so long since I fed any beef because of Koda. lol Anyways, I am rambling sorry. Time to go buy and chop some meats! ;D

Wow-I might take you up on that after Christmas, Katt! Those knives sound amazing. I use kitchen shears for turkey necks, but that sounds infinitely easier. Kitchen shears hurt the heck out of my hands getting right sized pieces for the furs from those things, and some bones. Also, my husband sharpens knives well-can you sharpen ulu knives yourself without damaging the knife? In any case, it sounds like a cool thing.

Since it's made of steel, I'd hope it can be sharpened Cause gods alone know- it will get dull enough here!

You should be able sharpen it. The ones that are pretty cheap come to you relatively dull so I want to try sharpening one and test it out just to be sure. I did take a fantastic video of the things it can do...only to realize that my camera hadn't been on! by then my meat pile was already pretty pulverized but I tried to make another video of it with the scraps. I need to edit it and then I'll post it. My phone won't let me edit though bc I already have too many pics! Hahaha I need to erase some fuzz butt pics to get the video done.
