That's one of the huge bonuses of feeding pumpkin and squash. It doesn't cause mal-absorption of nutrients. In fact it slows things down just a bit so that it actually gives the ferret a better chance at absorbing food. That's why it's such a benefit to IBD furkids. ciao

Cool. I'll at least get them used to it in case of a blockage if nothing else. Will most ferrets eat it plain or does it need to be mixed with something? I don't feed any ground or soupies, only whole prey, so it might be difficult to feed if they won't eat it by itself.

I've heard of some people who just feed it as it is. One thing to consider is teaching your little ones to eat soupy or a ground mix for when they get ill (it's not a nice thought I will agree, but with our furbabies an inevitable occurance ) It also means that you will have a soupy available and the ingredients and the mixture figured out. It's just a thought ciao

Oh they'll eat soupie (I used it when switching Tonks), I just don't like to make it if I don't have to. Whole prey is so much easier and I don't have to clean the blender

Ahhh, yes. I'm looking at that mess right now as I just finished making a 10 lbs of ground raw. I have the benefit of a course ground RMB but I still have to grind the organs and hearts to go into the mix. I have to agree, I'd much rather feed just prey...so much easier but this way it's rather like giving them a comfort food when they're feeling off or ill. Making it in this quantity means I only have to do this every couple of weeks instead of trying to put this together daily or even weekly ciao

I still give mine soups every week. With the way Boris is about anything he hasn't had in a month or more, it's just not worth the hassle for me to get him eating it if he's not well I just do up a whole batch, and freeze it down in ice cube trays, then double baggie it.

I suppose making a lot at once and freezing it wouldn't be so bad. My parents kind of flipped the first time they found out I'd put a rat in the blender

A few nights ago Katrinka was acting funny. Backing into the litter box over and over with no result. I gave her a couple of teaspoons of pumpkin along with a splash of olive oil. I'd never tried to give them pumpkin unless it was in a soup, but she ate it right up! Color me surprised! Within a couple of hours I had a big poopie and a sleepy fert. Must have been a hairball I guess. Couldn't see anything unusual in the poo.
