Maybe not such a good idea talking to the people who live there presently(just in case- safety reasons). If you do talk to the police, odds are they'll talk to the people there anyway.

awe, i'm sorry. yea, my dad rents out a house and he always meets and shows people around the house and has a credit check on them. though this is canada, so it's probably different in the US.

Thanks guys. I talked to the Realtor who actually has it listed and let them know. Now I'm pretty much stuck until after the holidays unless something magical pops up in the next 3 days (bc we have to give 30 days notice to move out and I will be visiting the parentals out of state Dec 13-Jan3).

I would imagine he/she must have been pretty shocked to find someone else trying to list their house!

I would imagine he/she must have been pretty shocked to find someone else trying to list their house! Well it wasn't his house, and it sounds like it was one of many listings they have. And the owner actually does live out of state now I guess. But yeah, he sounded grateful that I passed the info on and said they'd be on the watch for more stuff like that.

I totally understand your frustration with trying to find a pet-friendly apartment! You know, one that isn't a scam Silly people. We are essentially being forced out of our place right now... The previous resident manager said we could have pets other than cats (i.e. guinea pigs, chinchillas, *ferrets*, etc.), which is kinda why we moved here. Well, he moved a few months ago - which we didn't expect because the guy had been here for 20 years - and when the new manager came in, the company started cracking down on the "proper rules" and everything. The old manager was really relaxed, letting some people have small dogs even though dogs weren't technically allowed, stuff like that. Now, they're putting notes under our door every week or two reminding us of rules or changes or whatever. So, a couple weeks ago, we had an "inspection" by the new manager. This inspection, I should note, was probably illegal - they were going around to every apartment in the building, not just checking smoke detectors or whatever, but checking for "cleanliness" and "safety issues". The new manager was surprised to see our guinea pigs and chins (the ferrets and other critters were in the other rooms, with the doors shut, so she didn't see them). She said we weren't supposed to have them, but that we might be able to keep them with an additional $150 pet fee each... even though when we sent in our rental application for this place, which they accepted, we said we had guinea pigs and a chinchilla. The following Monday, we get a letter saying we had to have all pets except one cat gone within a week and we would be having "periodic inspections" in the months thereafter. Again, pretty sure this isn't legal, but I'd rather not fight it. We actually managed to find a new place in our neighborhood right away, with a ridiculously nice landlord who - and this is the best - had ferrets when he was a kid and loves the fuzzies! It's a little smaller and I'll no longer have heated underground parking (believe me, in Minneapolis, that is a luxury that's hard to give up in the winter!), but we'll live. Oh, and there's the whole moving in January thing... It won't be fun, but it gives us an excuse to splurge on a U-haul even though Ross' dad has a pickup and we're only moving about a half mile away. It will SO be worth it, because I can guarantee that come New Year's Day when we're having to move every(thing/body) over it will be -20 degrees F with a -40 windchill My point is this - it will work out and there are nice landlords out there! Believe me, they can seem few and far between... I'd know, I'm the daughter of landlords and I grew up in a duplex. My parents are kinda nice landlords, but they don't allow their renters to have pets even though they have a dog and I've complained about it. It's not nice. Critters need homes too! Best of luck to you in your search! <3

Just for the heck of it, I'd be tempted to let the landlord/tenant board know they are not only deliberately breaking leases, but also going into people's apartments without giving sufficient prior notice

I agree, with Sherrylynne, you should report it.

I would report it as well. But it sounds like you have a nice place to move to now! And I know EXACTLY what you mean about moving in Jan in the cold! haha I am hoping to find a place With a garage! Yeah right! The sad thing is that I loove my current apartment, but there are a few..issues. The landlady is awesome. I really love her a lot. She really watches out for everyone and is fun to chat with. Which of course just makes me feel kind of guilty for sneaking Koda in. :S But yeah, even though it is a No Pets apartment, she has been very kind to stretch the rules and allow us to have our reptiles, hamster, and breeder mice ("for the snakes"). She does not know about my roommate's chinchilla or Koda. The problem is that the chin and Koda are "illegal" there, we have serious mold problems, and being on the top floor apartment means that I can't really use my treadmill as much as I would like to. Also, a little more space, just a little (esp in the kitchen, and for storage!) would make a huuge difference. The mold and no-furred-pets are the biggest issues though. We have low rent, mostly quiet neighbors...but I need to get away from the mold and Koda needs a girlfriend!

The mold is a big turn off for me - I hope you can find a place, soon. I've seen people get really really sick from small deposits of "harmless" mold. Plus - I can't wait until Koda gets a little sister! LOL
