I have been giving Oscar rawhide bones but I read that they can cause intestinal blockages, Gi upset and other things. Is that true? He also likes pigs ears. Are those just as bad? What else can I give him to chew on. He loves to chew.

Please do not feed anything rawhide. It causes blockages. It is horrible stuff. It causes all sorts of intestinal issues. Pigs ears....they're smoked and truthfully...you won't feed ham and hot dogs don't feed pig's ears but on that note.... The problem that you encounter with pigs ears and they've been recalled a number of times is salmonella. You want something for your little one to chew...give him some raw bones. Soup bones, knuckle bones (these are the best) all raw (do not cook ) They are the best for pleasure chewing and to clean teeth. ciao

I've heard good things about knuckle bones but I'm always wary of large dense bones even for dogs. Tooth crackers I've heard them called. Personally I avoid them with my dogs but I know lots of people have great success with them.

I go to our local slaughter house and pick up beef bones and use a sawsall to cut them down to a good size...usually if you know someone who hunts or if there is a butcher or slaughter house in the area you can get the bones really cheap, if not free because usually those get tossed in the garbage... I've gotten all sorts of odd stuff including a whole skull, which I just tossed in the back yard for the dogs after I trimmed what meat and goodies off of it for their dinner... just about everything gets used here, the dogs got the beef head meat, ears, lips, tongue for dinner then the skull (with the eyes, I'm just to squeemish to cut those out) for their chewing pleasure! I've fed them for years. I think you have to know your dog. Some are very aggressive chewers, those dogs you may not want to give a knuckle bone to. My guys have always been rather recreational chewers. My wolfhound will eat the whole bone eventually but it's a gradual through the week type thing. It's not that he can't put one away, he just doesn't seem to care that much. He eats a whole sheep's skull in a sitting, so it's not because he can't do that. My 2 pyrenees both enjoyed sitting facing each other and chewing the bones, waiting for one or the other to get up so they could steal and chew on the other's bone. Guess it tasted better Even the ferrets get in on it. ciao

I took away all of his rawhide bones. What size antlers would be good for a dachshund. How long do the bully sticks and antlers last.

It depends on the Dachshound. Ours is a mixed miniture/standard dachshound and ate the antlers in about 2 days! Though she's been known to eat through toys meant for tough chewers too...

So I showed my mom the deer antlers and bully sticks. They are too expensive and she doesnt want to have to order them. She doesnt want to go to a slaughter house either becuase its gross. Is there anything thats cheaper that I can get at a feed store? The feed store have pig hooves. Are those ok?

Oh yeah! The dogs LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It is gross at times but eh I deal with it....there's nothing better than wretching with your mother in law while going through garbage cans full of tidbits ;P The main reason I deal with the ickiness is because it's free and well I can't beat that anywhere!

We had a problem with the hooves we got at the store. One of them slivered, and a sliver got stuck in our dog's upper gum, causing a massive infection before the vet actually could find what was causing it. I don't know if that's unusual or not, but we stayed away from them after that.

if he doesn't use the legs you can also give those to your dog...actually any bit of the carcass that he's not planning to use can be cut up, bagged, up and frozen until needed... I'm not sure if anything has to be done to the antlers or if they can just be given to the dog...

I would avoid rawhide... Supposedly it can swell after being swallowed which also contributes to blockages. I just wanted to add to that...because I was thinking of the rawhide bones we used to give our dogs... Have you ever looked at rawhide that has really been chewed on and is just all soggy? It expands. Now say they eat a big piece of the rawhide bone still dry and swallow it... it then has their stomach and rectum to expand in. Fun!
