I'm so happy!! It's so nice =] Sort of a dumb set up plan though.. If it wasn't for the weird instructions (mainly our doors weren't put on frame) it would have taken us about 40 mins to set up the 142, but we couldn't understand how to doors just 'balance' there.. HAH once we figured it all out, we finished it up in just under an hour.
It's nice and large, bigger than I thought, but sadly, the guy didn't clean it, and it feels disgusting.. There is oil on it (from their coat i would assume?) and it seems like there was pee on ever shelf and level... I cleaned it 3 times with vinegar and then put it in the shower and soaped it up, then put vinegar on it again when it was dry and the paper towel still came out yellow... I'm guessing this guy NEVER cleaned the cage... it was sort of sick..
I have a question though about the feet getting caught. I'm getting a few sets of bedding (from LFFB) but those wont come for probably 2 weeks or so, but I want sly in there noww =] What part of the ladder do they get caught, I looked at the top where they latch in, and it looks very close without much of a space in between.. I'm going to guess this is an older model (he tried saying that this cage used to be worth 2200 but I dont think anyone would spend that much on one.. but nonetheless with that statement, i'm guessing it's not a newer model which has been fixed)
Would I beable to put sly in the cage? or would that be risky? is there a substitution for the two or so weeks that I can put there so he isn't at risk?

I put pillow cases on the small shelf and covered the ramp in a long sock before I had bedding. The new shelves just came out a couple months ago, if you wanted you could order them online www.ferret.com/item/shelf-for-ferret-and-critter-nation/650387/. They are only $12.99 and they are a lot better. I have an FN 142 with the original shelves, but just got a 143 for my birthday and it came with the new shelves and ramp covers. But since you are getting better, you prolly don't need them. The new shelves are a lot sturdier too! So I would think about getting those bedding or not. You'll hafta post pics! I love seeing everyones cage setups.

Great idea! I'm so excited, but I might have to go buy new socks! Non I have are that big! hah. As for the pillow covers, would he need them?
Also, I might try investing in the new stands, but i'd buy them from a store (ferret.com doesn't ship here =[ ) thanks for the recommendation, i'm so excited to get home!

Grats on the cage! I remember setting up my FN 142. I did it alone and took forever Had to hold pieces in place while screwing in other pieces while making sure the sides didn't fall in...

HAH, Yeah we got lucky on a lot of things! for some parts, we would be like 2-4 steps ahead and then read something and be like... Oh shoot.. what one did we use?! Oh good, the right one!
I wouldn't beable to imagine doing it myself. With two people it was still tricky! like at one time we put something in wrong and had to hold the thing together without things slipping whil the DH slipped things in place. To me the way the had it at times was a little ridiculous aha.

Koda's cage was really disgusting when I got it too. What I ended up having to do was clean it over and over with vinegar and then I rinsed it super Well. Then I took the pans and shelves out and poured baking soda on them, added a Little water So it was like a paste that I spread around the pans and scrubbed them with. I let that sit overnight, scrubbed it more and rinsed it off really well. That cut most of the remaining oil and smell. As for the shelves use a pillowcase until you get your bedding.

Oh thanks Katt! I will do the baking soda thing tonight (well, maybe not overnight... i'm too excited! ahah) Did you find that the bars were also very oilly? like the sides and back?
Ours were sick, as we were handling them, they were slipping out of our hands, and we had to wash our hands throughout washing them. I didn't notice this earlier since I had mitts on, but I was a little choked that I brought it onto my nicely cleaned carpet..
I tried just wiping down the bars with vinegar, but i'm not sure how well that worked out. I'll probably try again.

Yea, you hafta buy those big tube socks type things, or the old men socks that go up to their knees.
I used the pillow case because there is a little space between the plastic and the wire on the edge of the shelf, I never had any problems, but pple do. Supposedly you can call Midwest and have them ship them to you if they ship up there.

I "redid" my ferret ramps with pieces of drain tubing, that I also have here and there in the house for them to run through. This picture is on it's side, I can't get it to stay upright the ferrets love running through their tubes.

I didn't notice this earlier since I had mitts on, but I was a little choked that I brought it onto my nicely cleaned carpet.. I tried just wiping down the bars with vinegar, but i'm not sure how well that worked out. I'll probably try again. Not as oily as you are describing, but still oily. If it is not too late, or if you can put your furrballs in their old cage or a bedroom for a little while, try this. You will probably need help. The FN will fit (almost) in the bathtub - be prepared to get wet! Put it in the tub, leaned against the wall with one set of wheels in the tub, the other resting on the edge of the tub so it is stable (so the long side of the cage is in the same direction as the long side of the tub). Or however you can get it in. The lifting in and out is what you will need help with. haha Anyways, use Dawn Dishsoap and HOT water - as hot as you can stand - and wash the cage bars in the shower. Scratch that...I am tired haha I put mine in the tub because it had all kinds of stuff on it so it was easier and quicker for me than cleaning the bars one at a time with a rag. I used the shower and a scrub brush. BUT I guess a bucket of HOT water and a rag and Dawn soap would work just as well, if not better. hahaha Jsut be sure that the water is as hot as you can get it, and use a lot of soap, but rinse really well. Dawn is made to cut grease and oils (leading brand for oil spills! woo-hoo lol) so if anything will get the oil off, Dawn should do it. You can do that while you let the baking soda paste sit on the shelves and pans. BTW - you can get a supersized thing of baking soda for really cheap. I recommend that. It might be in the cooking section, but I think that it might be by cleaning stuff too - just depends on your store. But you can NEVER have too much baking soda! haha I mix it into litter to cut odor, clean with it, cook with it (I have a separate box for cooking with lol)... Good luck and please take pictures! Oh yes, one more thing. You can get those black binder clips (linked below por a pic). Put a pillowcase over the entire shelf, fold it under, and clip it down with the binder clips. That will keep your shelves safe for ferret toes.

Dawn, good idea! I think it would be easier to do a bar at a time, opposed to all that work! LOL I wouldn't beable to get around the other sides of the cage with it being so big and my shower so small!! LOLOL
And Hmm I have thousands of those at work, I might steal a few =]
Also, I just bought a few beddings from LFFB, shipping is killer so I bought 3. they should come sometime next week and when they do, Pictures!
I'm so happy =] I have sly on the bottom one only, I'm scared his toes will get caught, or that the shelve will fall (i didn't make holes for the pillowcase, so it's not as secure. He's getting all the bedding he used to have in his (cage?) when I got him (maybe not cage, but it came with him) and I think he's pretty happy. There are some comfy things =]

LOL now I'm remembering when I brought home my FN too... it was mostly clean, but just in case I washed it anyways. I took the whole thing apart and put it in my bathtub. I filled it with hot water, pput some vinegar in there... then I turned on the 8 jacuzzi jets and let it sit in there. Then I took the sides that couldn't fit under the water and rotated them so all sides got clean. I emptied out the tub, then sprayed it with the shower head with some more hot water. Let it dry for a bit, then I dried everything off with a clean towel. Ready to go!

I was wondering not meaning to hi jack here but is it a double fn? How many ferts can fit in there? Also would that be females or males going in there?

Yes the 142 is the double cage. I'd say around 8 average size ferrets would probably be the limit for this cage assuming they got lots of time out of the cage.
