I mentioned to a co-worker this morning that we used to keep rats and she FREAKED out, going on and on about how rats give you rabies. I just sat there dumbfounded. I wanted to say "Um, you have a DOG and DOG's can give you rabies too if they HAVE RABIES IN THE FIRST PLACE." She acted like all rats give rabies. Like rabies is caused from handling a rat in any way. THEN she just couldn't believe that not only do pet stores sell rats as pets, but there are rat BREEDERS that breed different colors, coats, markings, etc. Seriously lady? Are dogs and cats the only pets you've ever heard of? Then she went on to say she used to have a pet mouse and that she's "never seen a rat I don't think." *head slam* And she has a Ph.D.
I need Tylenol.

Yeah I hate the look some people give you when they find out you have/had rats. They act like you're insane. And yet you get a similarly horrified look when you say you feed mice/rats to your ferrets Rats have no use except to spread the plague apparently Oh and give people rabies

Don't you just love people who prefer to leave their heads IN the sand ? I've had the same sort of reaction about ferrets. Not the rabies part, but how they "stink", and belong in the wild, of all things , and how could I have that "thing" in my house.

You can tell this sweetheart of a person....it's not rabies you silly sod....it's the bubonic plague...get it right ciao I agree. Obviously this lady is very confused. The Plague and Rabies are two very different things, that she should mix them up is astounding... *shakes head* *gives Tylenol*

You know, people don't really understand how rude it is to put someone down because of their pet choice. As long as it is well taken care of, what is the problem? Plus, some people need to figure it out-cats and dogs 'belong in the wild' just as much as rats.

Yah she wasn't really putting me down but she seemed VERY confused. I will have to tell her the bit about bubonic plague if she brings it up again, lol. I just have a hard time with the "I don't think I've ever seen a rat." REALLY?
