A thread to remember my dear friend, Maja.
Maja came to us when she was just around 6 months old. Her owner had brought her over on a plane from Poland a few months earlier. She was supposed to be a present for her grandson, but the family had just had a bay and didn't want to add a dog into the mix.
Her beginnings weren't the best - the teenaged boys living in the top apartment would bother Maja when the owner was around, and there are plenty of signs that pointed to them abusing her as well (kicking and dropping her)
Still, she was a hardy little dog, and once we got her she ended up becoming a great big part of our family. She listened to whatever we told her, to the point of ignoring other dogs if we told her to, even though she hated most dogs with a vengeance.
There's too much about her to write in just one topic - I'm sure I'd bore you all with it all.
This year in February Maja turned 14. She had been slowly losing mobility over the past year, but ever since January the progression began to speed up. In six months she lost pretty much any and all ability to use her limbs - she couldn't sit up, couldn't turn over when she was laying down, couldn't stay standing on her own. We tried everything from laser therapy to steroids and other medications, along with some holistic treatments since my vet is very holistic, but nothing worked.
Last week we made the very difficult decision to put her to sleep. It was a very difficult thing to do, even though we knew that it was the right thing for her at the moment. She was stubborn to the end, refusing to let us leave her sight. My parents and I were with her to the end, and even the vet and the vet tech teared up. We'd tried very hard to give her the best life we could.
Cataracts didn't slow her down, neither did arthritis. It was a chronic nerve degradation that did it, in the end, and it was probably because she was too stubborn to just fall asleep and not wake up.
Thank you, Maja, for near 15 years of love and devotion. You were the best dog anyone could ask for, and we miss you very much. <3<3<3
