dunno if its been asked before here but i'm curious so here i go....
when i got my pet rats about 9 or 10 years ago.. the first two were healthy boys.. the third wasnt planned :/ he was a sickly little black fella in an over crowded feeder tank and yeah i am a sucker... i even begged my ex boyfriend to loan me three bucks so i could "rescue" him ((wonder who the bigger sucker was that day lol))
anyway i ended up naming him Sick Boy because he was(later in life he had ascended testicle.. just never ending issues with him!)... i got a lot of heat from everyone for taking a rodent.. a RAT! to the vet. but he had the runs and was losing weight and too sluggish at such a young age. while the others were playing Pop Corn he would just hide at the other end of the cage.
Vet told me he had worms and at the moment i cant remember what type.... hook worms? pin worms? she gave me the meds for him and also to treat the others, because we all know worms love to share
But that got me to thinking..... i know you're supposed to choose the healthiest of the bunch, glossy coats, active, alert, healthy poops, etc.
but what ARE the odds of bringing home something with the mice that doesnt show until later?
do you guys deworm the rodents or just regularly worm your ferrets?
or do you let the vet determine that during a check up?
i've googled this but honestly i guess i'm probably the only person who thinks along the lines of potential parasitic infections lol
only because i've learned the hard way in the past...
I was told, with the rats, to give a half a grain of rice worth of ivermectin, but i think that was in regards to myco.... i never gave it to them because they never had the sniffles.
sorry for the odd question.
