that's strange. he has REALLY long legs. and is tiny. it could probably be that he hasn't been getting that much milk from momma mouse.

Those ones usually don't survive. They don't eat right, don't grow right and eventually someone eats him or they die. I've had several over the years, sometimes they even have strange coloured coats. You usually find the shivering in the middle of the box. From what I could tell none of the mothering mice will feed them. Unfortunately, law of the wild prevails even in the mouse house ciao

His legs really are long. I wonder if it is a birth defect of some sort, or due to malnutrition? Those ones usually don't survive. They don't eat right, don't grow right and eventually someone eats him or they die. I've had several over the years, sometimes they even have strange coloured coats. You usually find the shivering in the middle of the box. From what I could tell none of the mothering mice will feed them. Unfortunately, law of the wild prevails even in the mouse house ciao Yeah, he seems to have trouble getting any milk from the mom because he gets pushed aside. But, he IS 2 weeks old, so I mean he has to be getting something or he would already be dead... There is another runt about the same size as him, just a tiny bit bigger, who seems to be doing a lot better. I may hand feed that one a little to help him out, but I have seen him feeding. Heather, if I keep hand feeding him a few times a day for a few weeks, do you think he could make it? I am well prepared for the fact that he will most likely not make it, but he is so cute and pathetic and I have always had a thing for the runts, so I want to try. Then I can keep him a while and maybe eventually rehome him somewhere he will be a pet. Also, what is wrong with him? Is he just a runt with malnutrition issues, or do you think that his odd shape is due to a birth defect of some sort? I am pretty sure a few of the babies were eaten as pinkies, so I would think he would have been eaten then too being as tiny and weak as he is. Not sure why he wasn't...

I'm not sure why these little ones don't die within the first little while as there are always little ones who are "disposed" of. I honestly don't know if by hand feeding your little one, you might be able to postpone or even prevent the death of your little one. I know that I did have one that appeared to make the hump of survival, he appeared to have survived and was actually gaining strength but the other day I found him dead. I wonder if there is some type of organ failure or heart problem that is the basis for this. They are indeed malnourished but it's not that they don't have all the privileges that the other baby mice have. I had one that was in with a group of 3 females who were all nursing little ones but there were only 6 or 7 babies. It still happened. I would look at perhaps that this phenomenon is defect related and not necessarily just nutritional deprivation. This is just an observation and does not have any scientific basis. ciao

Hmmm...well this will be an interesting experiment then. There is another runt about the same size who seems to be doing relatively ok, so perhaps I will hand feed that little one too and see how he does? Because if it was a strength thing, they are about the same size, then they would both live or die it would seem, but if it was a defect thing, one would live and one would die. In theory.... haha
