If he's not nasty, he doesn't need a bath! Mine only get baths if they drag themselves through their poo or something gross like that. And if they can be rinsed off without soap - even better! The soap is what strips the coat. Just water is fine! For a dig box, how about dirt? I don't think it'd cost too much to buy a bag of plain soil, and earlier in this thread it was said that it works pretty well to remove that ferrety smell and such. Don't use J&J on him. If you need something inexpensive, buy some kitten shampoo. That's what I had to do to start off with. So you're saying if he never gets dirty, I could go a full year without bathing him?? Well thats nice! Just plain water does a good job of refluffing him up, his fur is sooo soft when its wet! You're right, a dig box full of soil could be pretty fun. It seems so far that Kiwi will be my digger! I heard that J&J was ok to use? I am surprised that you suggest kitten shampoo. Depending on the price I might go ahead and get the shampoo and rinse from the same place. Its nice to buy a product that is recommended from someone who already has it and has had experience with it working great.

No idea myself. I have to look into buckeye bash. Is there a link for a site or something? I wouldn't be able to go unless I had an apt by then and My b/f could watch the ferrets. We both live at my parents. And he won't stay here unless I'm here cuz he hates my dad (hes a drunk.) We used to live at his parents when we just had Loki but they were being AC Nazis and it was getting really hot in the house. At one point they litteraly unhooked the AC wire so that it couldn't be turned on at all. I hate those people. So i told the B/F either move into my parents with me or we are done.

Save your money and move out! It only gets cooler living on your own!! I LOVE IT! PS. Biggest perk is I can have a pet!

I'll be able to go next year for sure. And my dad's side of the family lives there so I'll have a free place to stay. Wouldn't be able to bring the fur kids but thats alright. I got to look into finding government housing that accepts pets. This week my Grandma told my mom she would help me pay bills.

I'm really not sure whats wrong with Johnson&Johnson, but bathing once a month when they really aren't dirty or if they haven't gotten into anything, sounds rather excessive. You are stripping their skin of the natural oils they produce, over bathing causes them to over produce oils. You may be hindering what you're trying to do in the first place- make their smell less noticeable.

jonhson & johnson is really made for human babies i dont use that on our ferrets even though its tearless its not made for the animals fur and skin and yes giving them a bath once a month is too much once a year is more like it if they get into something and need a bath for for it but reg brushing is all u really need like i said it was just my 2 cents on the human shampoo

One thing that has really helped my 3 is our dig box. We used leveling sand as our filler and it is a mix of sand and dirt. I believe it helps absorb some of their oils because their smell has dwindled a little since we made it for them.

Instead of giving them a bath before company vsists, wipe them down with an all natural pet wipe. I found some that have no alcohol and also have aloe. The wipes will get any surface dirt off their coat without stripping any oils and will "freshen" them up a bit.
Sometimes just tossing the damp towel you've just used is enough for them to roll and play in to get spiffed up.
Cheers, Kim

You may be hindering what you're trying to do in the first place- make their smell less noticeable. I bathe my ferrets about once a month, and it doesn't make their smell any worse at all. And their coats aren't overly dry, either. At first I used a ferret shampoo, but that made them itch a lot..so I switched to a kitten shampoo that I found that conditions as well. It even has little microbeads to remove excess hair to prevent hairballs. I had asked my vet (at Michigan State University's small animal hospital. She teaches exotics at the school) which is really the only vet at state with ferret experience, and has even owned many herself. She said that bathing one a month is fine, and shouldn't be harmful at all as long as we use a gentle shampoo. I suppose it might depend on the ferret. Ours do fine with being shampooed. The only time they get stinky is when they get upset (like when Rikki first met Lucy, our neighbor's ferret..and he would attack her. He would get VERY skunky/musty around his neck because he was so ticked off).

Once a monce at the MOST is how often they should be bathed but the way lots of us view it is why put them through the stress (if they don't like baths) and why waste shampoo if they aren't dirty and don't need a bath. If your hair was clean would you wash it anyways? I wouldn't my hair would dry out and feel horrible. I figure it would be they same for a ferret. So I choose to bathe them once or twice a year. As needed.
