My two fuzzies are currently housed in the FN 142. Recently I've been considering getting a 143 to add on. The only reason I'm hesitating is because for the most part, all they use the cage for is sleeping so I'm wondering if more space would even matter.
They do spend the majority of their time in the cage because I work in addition to being a full time student. They come out in the morning to eat and when I get home in the evening they spend a few hours out playing. Fridays and weekends they get lots of play time.
So what do you guys think, should I invest in a 143? I know they don't really need the extra space because the 142 is plenty big enough for two ferrets but would they appreciate it?

A lot will depend on the ferrets....how old are they? How big are they? Do they hang together all the time? or do they commonly sleep in separate locations? have 4 ferrets that have their own room. I leave the cage door open in the day so they can come and go as they please. My FN consists of two 3-story units built into a single cage (no center walls). all 3 levels have potty boxes and water. Food is on the bottom level. There are some sleeping hammocks on the bottom floor, but it's mosty a thoroughfare, a dining area and a very large potty box to remind them to make a "pt stop before they leave the cage to play. The middle level has a lot of sleeping stuff and foraging cups. My brats do use all 3 levels. If you do get the top level, set it up as a play space or something different so they'll be sure to use all 3 levels. Remember that it will be more to clean, and if you're short like I am, you won't be able to see the floor of the top level . -jennifer

I have two in a 143 and am really happy with it. Top level is water dishes and feeding dens (and nothing else, for easy cleaning). Middle is all hammocks and blankets. And the bottom is one giant litter box, which might be my favorite part. So mine definitely use the whole space.
Because the room's ceiling is low, we removed the bottom shelf/stand and the whole thing sits on a platform with rolling casters. That's how I reach the top floor!

What does making the bottom level into a giant litter box involve? Do you just spread litter all over the bottom tray?

I used a large plastic "mixing tub" from a home improvement store. I believe it was somewhere around the paint/concrete mix area. The lip has to be cut off, and then it's just about a perfect fit. I spot-scoop once or twice a week -- mostly just to be monitoring their poop for anything weird -- then dump the whole thing when it's too messy. There are also Rubbermaid under-the-bed containers that cover 1/2 of the FN tray perfectly, if you don't want to give up the whole level.
