So I've been thinking a little bit too much, as I usually do, and I thought I'd ask some ferret people what they think or what they have done with their own fuzzies. I remember reading somewhere that a few people think it is better to switch ferrets over to raw "cold turkey" without the transition as it is less stressful than slowly switching them over. Is this true? Is there are proof to back this up?
Now with kibble, would this also apply? Do you guys think that slowly switching kibbles is better for them? My two girls came to me on Marshalls. I was in the process of switching them over to Dr. Foster's Original food and before I hit the point where I was going to mix half and half of each food I just said F this and gave them all Dr. Foster's as their diarrhea seemed to be getting worse and I didn't want to pay another 20 bucks for a little bag of Marshall's crappy food. I got a TEN POUND bag of the better kibble for 8 bucks. Like seriously? And the thought of my babies on that Marshall's food for any longer made me cringe because I felt that switching them quickly to a better food was better than paying to support Marshall's stinky, fishy food. The girls already look healthier and are gaining weight. They still have diarrhea but it doesn't seem as bad as it was before and it is a lot less stinky already. Phew.
Wow, long post. Also, I'd just have you all know that my ferrets are currently living at a friend's house where I visit them every day to care for them. I immediately wanted them on a better diet and did a lot of research on the types of kibbles available. While I was in the process of switching them, I found this site and started looking into raw/whole prey. I do plan on switching them, but I want to wait until after they move into my new apartment and are settled in so I can watch them more closely during the transition. I actually tried giving them some raw chicken the other day but my one turned her nose up and the other would grab a piece, lick it, and leave it on the cage floor and go back for kibble, haha. Probably won't be an easy switch but it will be worth it! (:
