I'll be picking up my two ferret kits in a couple days and am planning to feed them a whole prey diet. I've ordered frozen mice, rats, chicks, and rabbits to make up the bulk of the diet. I know chicks should be fed sparingly because they lack calcium. What I'm wondering about is feeding insects and worms as part of the diet. I read through Ferrets for Dummies 2nd Ed. and it mentioned feeding crickets, mealworms, waxworms, superworms, earthworms, and cockroaches as part of a whole prey diet. I can get crickets, mealworms, and nightcrawlers pretty easily. Can these be included as part of the diet? If so, how often? Are they better fed as an occasional treat? Thanks

I'd say since they are mainly going to be on a whole prey diet, then the insects could easily be a meal or two a week. I'm fairly certain insects also make up a good portion of a diet for their wild cousins, so it makes sense to feed it to them on a regular basis.

put the bugs in the bathtub. the crickets can be fun for ferrets - although they're small and hard for some ferrets to see/track. My kids don't like to eat them.....Tomichi will eat one and barf it up within a minute of eating it. jennifer

Found out yesterday evening that Willow loves earth worms Had her outside for a while, and she had the grandest time pulling them up from the garden

She's the only one who ever has! I think likely because they were moving right in front of her
