The only reason I thought of mice for Sora is that he has the drive to actually chase and bite into things unlike Twilight. Thought perhaps if he chased a small prey animal he would attack and kill it on instinct and perhaps recognize it as food. I suppose this is an incorrect assumption though? Twilight likes mice, Sora is picky as heck though so I'm not sure how well it would work. Suppose the frozen is worth a shot as Twilight will eat it if Sora doesn't (always fun when they think it's a toy too and try to play tug with it sigh). The blender is a lost cause it seems, so it's to walmart for that (as I said in my last post though... might take longer then I like). Grinder is sadly looking like a lost cause too... That attic looks small, til you realize how much junk is up there. Good news is my attic is getting clean Is there any raw meat they can not have? I have a small amount of 80% lean ground beef left over from making dinner tonight and I was wondering if it would be safe for Twilight to have. I know they can't have bacon but is there anything else? And is slightly freezer burnt meat okay? I'm about to clean out the freezers to make room, and there seems to be quite a bit of beef products that I nor my family could eat, but wondering if it could go to the fuzzies.

Anything that hasn't been cured, salted, etc is fine, as is freezer-burned stuff. So pretty much anything in your freezer is good! That leftover beef is perfectly good, so you can definitely use that! Some ferrets with high prey drives kill and eat, some don't. It's sort of a mystery to me. My Tank, like I said, has a very high prey drive, but getting him to EAT the mice he killed was like pulling teeth! There's very little rhyme or reason, it seems, as to where the connections begin and end It's worth a try though, if you think that regardless, someone will kill it and someone will eat it. Try a younger mouse or pinky if possible at first, that might be easier for Sora to understand - but it might not, either. It's sort of a guessing game!

Yay! Freezer cleaning just got easier! That also opens a whole window of Craig's List cast offs (I see freezer burnt meat posted for free fairly often posted as "for pet consumption only"). I know Twilight will eat mice, just don't know if anyone will kill it... And then I'm stuck with a mouse I can't personally kill. I'll look into coordinating with a friend I have who live feeds his snake- Basically if my kids don't kill it, his snake can have it. He was talking about breeding feeder mice too though I'm unsure if he started yet. Might make my life a little easier as no matter what the mouse becomes nutrition for someone.

I think the air conditioning is confusing my ferrets .... they seem to be getting fluffier rather than less fluffy. I personally think it stays a bit warm in the house, I've even given them a frozen water bottle in a sock in their cage cause I worry they might get a lil uncomfortable (and boy do they enjoy that).... maybe I'm just imagining things? Twilight scarfed down some ground beef today. He's pretty open to new things it seems, and willing to trust taking food from my hand. Sora is still being stubborn and I'm sadly still waiting on money to get that dang blender.

Go Twilight!!
What is the average temp in your place? Their new coats, being on a better diet (both of them!) will naturally be fluffier and nicer, even during the summer. So that could be part of it. Do they seem to have a winter coat or is it definitely summer? What is Twilight's mask like (that will be a good indicator of what season his body is in!) If he still has his hood, it's likely he's in summer mode. He'll probably be lighter around the face in wintertime.
I am jealous that you see so much free meat on Craigslist. I've never seen ANY and that would definitely be a great source of usable foods!!

I'm getting a thermostat. I have no idea what temperature it is in here. Sora is naturally fluffy it seems, Twilight just seems fluffier then usual. Sora is really light around the face, and Twilight is quite dark. I'm confused now And my grandmother has informed me in exchange for doing her taxes she'll get me a cheap blender at walmart, so hopefully I can go do that Friday afternoon.

Aw, sweet deal! Grandmas are sort of awesome My guess is Twilight's fluff is the diet and not the season. My kids are all soft and fluffy even though they're in summer coats. Compared to a kibble kid, they're wayyyy fluffier and softer. But that's just because they are on a good diet! Sora, well, the white kids are whitish around the face always so who knows. Are you putting the AC on?

*Sigh* hectic day was hectic so I missed the trip to get a blender today sadly, and the weekend is shaping up to be even worse. Considering the boys are in my room A/C is on pretty much all the time.

Wanted to let you know I'm still around and will give an update ASAP. I've been having some internet problems- First from a tornado and now from a cord that needs replacing. Yesterday I got a bad case of food poisoning and still working on recovering from it today.

Okay, everything is finally in working order... Got Twilight eating some turkey neck the other day. Seems he'll eat most anything I sit in front of him. Sora is being stubborn as can be still. Won't touch chicken, turkey, liver, or anything else. I finally got a blender, though I have no idea what to do with it...

Oh wow, what a terrible past few days! I hope you are feeling better/the tornado didn't do too much damage to your area. That must be terrifying!
Yay on the blender! Try blending into a puree a small amount of boneless chicken, and some well-soaked, crushed up kibble. Add water to make a soupy-consistency. Try spoon-feeding that mixture to Sora. At first, make it mostly kibble with about 25% chicken. If he takes that alright, up the chicken to 50%.
Twilight is doing great! Is he able to eat the turkey neck bones???

The soup did not go over well... at all. No one would touch it. Less chicken, more kibble still didn't work. I tried less and less and even the mixed straight kibble but it didn't get over with anyone. Twilight had some trouble with the turkey necks- I've gotten him going for full chicken wings now and I've been working on adding mice. Speaking of mice... While tearing apart, painting, and redoing this whole room apparently a mouse found his self in here. Apparently Sora is a good little hunter though... Being as it was a wild mouse I didn't give anyone a chance to touch it after that, but Sora did kill it. Scared the heck outta me.

I'm not sure I want to try soup again. Last night was a very bad experience... I mixed some wet kibble, water, and raw stew meat in the blinder. I put the mix in a dish, put it in the cage, and.... Success! Sora was lapping it up. A couple minutes later.... Sora started vomiting. 3 or 4 times he vomited until it all seemed to come up. I was a frantic mother- I got 3 to 4ccs of water into him with a syringe and he seemed playful and alert, and everything still looks fine now still. It freaked me out horribly still though. I'm not sure if it was too much water in the soup (can that be a problem?), him eating to fast, or something else all together.

Sometimes when kibble and raw meats are blended, it can upset a ferret's stomach. Kibble digests at a much different rate than raw meat, and this can cause indigestion and upset tummy. I wouldn't throw the idea out just yet - if they ATE it, that's a good sign! It could also have been he ate too quickly.
I can't believe Sora killed a mouse in the house! Go Sora! But yeah, you could freeze the dead mouse to kill any parasites it has, but I wouldn't feed it fresh.
If you try the soup again and Sora vomits again, try adding a small amount of plain yogurt to the soup. The probiotics in yogurt can help pre-digest the food so that it is easier for his tummy to handle.
