I got some mice today. Three, two to breed and one for an introduction. My two ferrets, both around two years old, didn't like it. They LOVE lax so I put a little on the mouse and the girl ferret (Baby), well her instincts kicked in. She chased it a little and kept grabbing it by the neck. I let this go on for less then a minute and then humanely killed the mouse because she didn't know how =/. I've put peices of the mouse in their food, and I'm hoping they'll eat it lol. I can't wait to have them hunting their prey! The next time I put them in this situation, I will be using a pinky or fuzzy. Any other suggestions?

I actually had to use pinky mice cut up into their meat to disguise it before they'd eat it. They simply don't recognize it as food. If you are going to be feeding live, you might also want to start with something like hoppers, so as not to "oversize" the ferret to prey. That way they can learn to make a cleaner, faster kill.

it would also help your ferrets if they were hungry. my girl didn't kill her first mouse, I'm assuming because well, she wasn't that hungry. i had to kill the mouse as well. so the next time i tried a mouse, she was fed in the morning and the mouse was fed around 9 at night. what sherrlylnne said about not over sizing the ferret to the mouse is also well true. my girl got 2 week old babies. that way there was enough movement, but the mouse couldn't also seriously hurt her.
