I'm not sure my first two ferrets ever learned their names. I never trained them to. Since the two were always together and would react to everything I 'd say, I could not determine if they understood the concept of having a unique name. This my current brats know their names. Although the may choose to not listen, all 4 know who they are and will respond individually to their specific names - if they feel like doing so (even when no food is involved). Here is how I taught them: Every time I picked up and held oe of the brats, I repeated his/her name over and over again while I held him/her. I would set that ferret down and pick up the next ferret and repeat his/her name, etc. Now the brats know who's who. For example: If I call for Kachina, usually, only Kachina responds, etc. The girls are more likely to get up and come when called....the boys are more likely to raise their heads ad look at me Have you taught your ferrets to know their names? If so, how many ferts do you have? what training process did you use? How well do your ferrets respond to their names? -jennifer

Have you taught your ferrets to know their names? Kind of lol He knows it even if he pretends not to sometimes If so, how many ferts do you have? One...makes things easy what training process did you use? I say his name to him all of the time, when we are playing ,when I call him to me (meaning I get his attention, and he decides if he wants to come see me or continue playing and destroying things lmao) How well do your ferrets respond to their names? moderately. He looks when we say his name, but does not necessarily come or anything like that and sometimes he ignores us.

Let's see. Boris knows his name, and will usually come when I call him by the name "Boris-boy", as in "where's my Boris-boy" Sinnead has never responded to hers. But she does understand the phrase "young lady!" when she's into something she shouldn't be! Vincent- I really don't know if he does or not. He seldom responds, and when he does, it could just as easily be to my voice. Lucrezia and Willow- both deaf, so no Zeus, no. Athena, definitely. She looks up and then runs the other way, the brat Miss Emily and Suki both look up at their names, but don't come to them. For the training, really none. Boris got lots of cuddles and lovin's with "That's my Boris-boy", Athena knew her name when she came to us. Miss Emily and Suki, simply through repitition while holding them. I didn't do it specifically so they would know their names, just always talk to them when holding them(and otherwise)

My guys know their names and come when they're called. I never really paid much attention to it until a friend asked if they knew their names'. I said yes,she then said would they come when called. Not really knowing,I called for each one by name (2 were downstairs and 1 was upstairs)I was actually impressed when each one showed up! I love it,I would say 99% of the time whoever I call will stop what he/she's doing and come to me. I'm not sure how"I trained them". I guess their name and come on would be used alot.

Darlene, I'm impressed....I wish my brats were that responsive - in a positive way. For nail trimming or ear cleaning...If Tonto knows what's going on (i.e., he's not first or he see's I have the nail trimmers out), he look when I call and slink off in the opposite direction If he thinks there's a treat - he's right there. If he thinks nothing on any significance is going on, he my blow me off completely. If he's out of the ferret room, I don't even exist They KNOW that mommy is well-trained!!!! I never knew if ferrets really associated names with specific ferrets until I got 4 of them. When I had only 2, I was not sure if they were responding to our voices and or voice tone since the 2 boys were always together. But with 2 very sweet boys and two girls (all of which have flaming attitudes), there's no doubt in my mind that each one knows their name. I never started training them to learn their names until about 6 months ago....They already knew their names, which they picked up on their own. I wanted to see if reinforcement of their names through training would make them more responsive. It's made NO DIFFERENCE i their responsiveness. When I pick up a brat and repeat his or her am, my brat is probably thinking, "my god, mommy is really stupid - it's taken her THIS LONG to learn who's who? " Hey! that's a good one or a cartoon....maybe I'll draw something up and see if the AFA people want to put in their publication . Too bad I'm not talented enough to get rich like Scott Adams (Dilbert) and quit my job . -jennifer

Some of mine know their names. I just use their names when talking to them and calling them. Napoleon, Mad Max they both come when called. My Loki (rip) always came when called. Odin responds but doesn't necessarily come (at least he gets out of the garbage pail ) Thor....well Thor is Thor is not too bright. Ghenghis (rip) used to come when he was called. Sprite, will if she's not occupied doing something else. Captain Jack responds but not too well, but he's only been running here for a couple of years. Calypso, not at all. Obviously, Lady "B", Fun-Go, Lady Natasha and Boris don't as they're deaf. Now, I can call all of them at once by just calling Ferrets....babies.....ferrets. They all come running. My son laughs at me as I walk down the hallway with all these little ferrets playing and bouncing around my feet. He says I'm the pied piper of ferts I taught them to do this, by taking them hunting. I call them all together to go mouse hunting. They will come from all over the house. They even bring the deafies. ciao ciao

We are working on teaching names. We use a different tone when we say the names than normal talking. So they may just learn "their" tone and not the actual name but it fills the same need.
Currently only have 2 but hope to add others in the future.
With Dianne I can add in treats if she comes when I call, but for Jack its harder. He's kinda ho-hum about life in general and turns his nose up to treats even bits of their regular kibble.
They respond like once in every million calls lol. They are so much more independent than cats its hilarious but dangerous too. I'm hoping to get them microchipped when my vet is back. I called and he will be back Friday but we will be gone lol. Will get their distemper shots then too.

I know Pandora knows her name, she gets called out to take care of the mice before I feed them so she is very responsive. Koda seems to know his, probably because he's a trouble maker and I'm always calling him away from something. Craven is deaf. Pip was Pippen when I adopted him, not sure if he does and Blackie doesn't seem to have a clue.

Buffy & Bindi will both come when I call them, surprises me every time. No I didn't teach them, just heaps of cuddles & talking to them. Ozzie does not care what I say, tho he is new only had him 3 months. He might get to know his name over time. At the moment tho, its just "Ozzie stop bashing up the girls", but Bindi gives him heaps too.

It seems like all ferts that have good hearing learn their names My first two boys would come regardless of whose name I was calling, so I could never tell if they made a distinction between the names. With the 4 I have now, it's very clear that ferts can pick up on who's who even if you don't reinforce the individual names. The thing that kills me the most is when two ferts are doing something bad...if I say one name, the correct fert will look at me as if to say, "who me? I wasn't doing anything!!!!" while the other fert continues being bad. If I call the other fert's name, the other fert will respond the same way, and the first fert will go back to being bad!!!! This is usually when two are carpet digging They are such blatant BRATS -jennifer

I have 7 ferrets now... Jasmine I was told is deaf, I think she may have some hearing but... Crumb her cage mate knows his name, is very people oriented, call his name and he comes. Crumb is a lover and is finally starting to play and act like a ferret. Ping is deaf and I think even if she could hear she wouldn't listen to me...maybe her pet Emmett, my oldest skinkid...I don't think she likes me.... Tai knows her name because it's usually yelled out when she's managed to get into the kitchen cabinet and starts emptying my rubbermaid out onto the floor...I yell her name and she stops and looks at me as if to say... "What?!?!?! I'm being good!" Slink and Slither are like men, they have selective hearing, sometime they come when called but other times, I'd be better off speaking a different language. Now Miss Gabby...she's a few french fries short of a happy meal, I really don't think she understands that her name is Gabby, that when I say that name I'm talking either to her or about her...she's clueless! I'll have to try holding her and repeating her name, maybe even add a few treats in there to see if she has the capacity...
