I know this question has probably come up a lot, but I was just wondering about this today while I was at work. We have feeder goldfish, and I know that these fish are probably not good to feed to our ferrets because of all the chemicals and such that go into the water (though our system doesn't really use any harmful chemicals) and the high ammonia levels and such. But what if I were to breed my own feeder fish here at home. A few species that I was considering...
Comet Goldfish (if I were ever able to tell the sex of a goldfish) Mollies
I'm mostly interested in Comets though since they produce so many. I could sell them as feeders to other people as well as use them in homemade cat and dog food. So what is the verdict on this one? I have some 20g tanks sitting around and I could always invest in bigger tanks if needed, depending on what I bred. I was also considering getting an Oscar at some point, so breeding my own feeder fish for it would be nice too. One female comet goldfish can drop 1000 eggs or more in one spawning, so I'd be swimming (haha) in comet fish with only a pair or two.

Guppies might be good too they are very prolific once established. I just need to get a pair of females to have a tank setup to do it. Swordtails are also very prolific. I would not recomend any kind of goldfish, they are very dirty and very hard work to keep properly.

I agree on no goldfish. They produce a lot of ammonia, and I don't feel they are ever really healthy. Guppies are always a good idea, they breed like mad, and drop live babies. You can get gorgeous, larger varieties, too.
Mollies are good, too, as they also drop live young. They can be housed with guppies.

Well I'm getting baby livebearers for free. At work, the filters suck up any babies birthed in the main tanks and the babies get dumped into tanks below the "fish wall" (wall of fish tanks) My manager said as long as I scoop them out, I can have whatever I find in these tanks. Today I found 5 little baby fish. All live bearers. I believe one is a guppy, 1 is a molly, 1 is a platy, and the other 2 I'm not sure about but they are probably platies. I might raise these up to feed to my ferrets. They are not costing me anything to raise (already had tank and supplies)
