If you're talking about where they can get their toes caught, it's not as much a gap as a place they could pinch their toes. There is the plastic platform, encased in the metal frame of the shelf. The tiny little space between the plastic and the metal frame is where, if they kind of teeter on their toes like they do when they think about jumping, that they can slide a toe under the bar and into that tiny little space. Then when they jump, the toe bends back and they get stuck. I've heard of nightmares about ferrets hanging by their back toes. All second hand stories, and probably a total freak accident type of thing, and can easily be fixed with shelf covers. Sorry to butt into you two glad koda is doing better. if you like i can try to get my fiance to make up some patterns for you. she made these awesome punk themed plaid shelf covers, complete with steel grommet holes for the ramp hooks to slide into and velcro straps. Matching hammocks and blankets too. lemme see if i can rustle up some pictures. OH! that reminds me, i'll try to find the pictures we took of cassi's surgery stitches as they healed, so you can see a progression. i'll post them on your other thread, if you want?

FOUND A LINK! This is a youtube video that shows the spot on the older shelves that they can get hurt on. I have the newer shelves. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6o49Y4hurogthis guy obviously had it happen to his monster, 'cause the video makes it sound like the cage is a death trap. I think simple preventative measures can solve it permanent.

That video was perfect - thank you! I think I have the newer version. *phew* And yes, I would LOVE to see pictures of Cassi's scars. I would say yes to the patterns too, as long as they can be adapted to no-sew. haha I am pretty hopeless at sewing. I have absolutely NO patience for it. I would rather shoot myself in the foot most of the time. BUT if I could figure out how to work a sewing machine I might be able to sew some bedding seams.

Weeeellll...I finished the rest of Koda's bedding (or what I will make for a while anyways haha). I had a brutally long day (WEEK) or tests today and afterward decided that finishing up the cage would be a good break from homework. I took pictures and will post them later, I promise. haha I made shelf covers, and I made one ramp cover but I decided that I didn't want a ramp on the bottom and I didn't make a cover for the middle ramp. I may just take the top ramp out as well and put the cover on the middle ramp. He has 1 hammock (bought, not made), 1 pocket hammock, a box-cave (cardboard box that conveniently matches the bedding lol), the Marshall's red octopus toy (he is sleeping in it right now sooo cute! ), and some toys. I am using a capri-sun box as a feeding den atm, but I am going to cover a plastic mouse cage that I have and use that as a feeding den since the ardboard gets gross so quickly. AND - I am excited - I finally attached the littler box to the sides so it is STUCK in the corner, AND I found a lock-crock water dish at Wal-Mart for WAY cheaper than PetCo (of course) that I want to get after Finals. Anyone ever use a lock crock for food? He has recently taken to pretending to be a turtle with his food dish. Which spill food. Or moving the food dish to his litter box (which also spilled it). He has his big dish back, so he can't put it in the litter box (I hope) but he still likes to crawl under it. I am thinking a lock crock would at least help keep food from being tossed out?

For the cage mats, I just made 2 full rectangles and folded the corner under and tied it for the ramp opening. I can still close the ramp ok and this way I have 2 full bedding floor mats if I need it. Bottom view (ceiling of the bottom level): Top View (floor of the top level) The mat on the top in this pic is under the litter box now: And this is when I was moving him between levels for cleaning purposes when he was still healing after the surgery. You can see the floor mats better. And, not sure if I posted this, but here is the edging of the no-sew-turned-inside-out bedding lol If I were better at it and more accurate with the cutting it would look like a nice little braid.

Regardig the shelf isues with the FN's...... I posted info on a "fix" for the old-style (and new-style shelves) as follows: holisticferret.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=cage&action=display&thread=4304The description was not easy to write up, so I'm hoping it makes sense and is useful. Please let me know if you have any questions! You can post them right in the thread for the fix since others will probably have the same questions from my probably-inadequate description -jennifer

mjohn you're going to love ceramics! best medium to work with in my opinion. katt i love your cage! i too need things to match. my room is line green and carolina blue themed. so the kids' floor and shelf mats are green and the hammocks are blue for the shelves i just double up two pieces of fleece and clip them to the shelves using binder clips. no sew and no slip- works wonders!
