Hello.
I'll start this by saying I do not currently own any ferrets, but plan to adopt a pair in a year or two.
I am currently owned by 17 rats, 6 mice, 1 natal rat, 1 hamster, a host of hissing cockroaches, and one pyscho terrier.
My rats are my absolute babies, residing in a Feisty Ferret and a Ferret Nation and taking up all my room. I sew hammocks religiously, and am a stickler for appropriate diets.
My puppy is on a prey-model raw diet. Though whole prey still squicks her out, but we're getting there! She mainly eats chicken, turkey, some beef, venison, and whatever I can get ahold of. I'm hoping to buy a whole goat or sheep this spring to fill my freezer, as well as some mice and rabbits.
I have always wanted ferrets, but my rats conquer most of my time. Once my colony of females passes away, and I have just my males, I will be trying to adopt a pair of ferrets from one of the semi-local rescues. I'm going to use my Feisty Ferret for the newbies, as I think it's good room for a pair of weasels.
I will hopefully have an animal room by the time I adopt these guys/gals, and will be hardware clothing my Ferret Nation so no "meetings" occur between rats and ferrets.
I already have an exotics vet who I'm in good standing with. The cage, and plenty of knowledge in making rat hammocks. It'll be nice to have a furry who doesn't eat through the nice things I make for them!
I'm really joining to gain more knowledge and make sure I do this the right way.
I'd like to go a raw/whole diet route with my future ferrets. Though rats will not be on the menu, as I don't think I can stomach that. But mice, quail, everything my pup eats, and more.
I'm impressed that ferrets can actually crunch through chicken bone that my puppy sometimes has a hard time with!
Anyhow, I'm rambling.
I'm glad to meet everyone!
