Hi Darlene,
Yes, the lard is offered free choice. I smear a blob of it ( about two tablespoonfuls at a time) onto a dish and leave that for them to lick. When its gone I wash the dish and replace the blob. It is unsalted lard - I get a pound block, usually from the Mexican food to aisle at the grocery store. I live in Florida, have a downstairs apartment that stays a fairly constant 68-70 degrees F. I've not encountered any issues with the lard lick going bad. I keep the unused portion in the fridge.
I offer this free choice daily because I want to ensure they get adequate fat in their diet. Cornish game hens, chicken necks and rabbit are not very fatty meats, while the turkey hearts tend to have fatty tops - it isn't anything close to thirty to 40 % of their total dietary intake - which is perfectly adequate for ferrets.
The lard is from beef and pork sources (according to the label). Cheers, Kim

Thanks Kim for the info. I'm going to try it with my ferrets.

Rats are illegal there? Yea, basement might be too dark and chilly for breeding mice. Yeah- Alberta is legally "rat free" They are killed on sight, by law. Worse than your California ferret situation. It's my understanding that some border idiots used to kill ferrets when they apprehended them a while ago, but were forced to stop that. Rats are still killed here.
