Has anyone here trained their ferret to do some sort of a trick? For example, sit up, or roll over or something similar? I started with teaching Izzy to come to me when I flick the lights (since she's deaf). It was way easier than I thought, mainly because she was so curious as to why the lights were flicking crazily - and I flooded her with treats & praise She actually does it consistently... can you believe that?? I clicker train Maddie (my dog) and I figured this would work well for ferts as well, if I could get them to pay attention. But, since Izzy is deaf, I haven't had much success with her other than coming to the lights. But I've been working on getting Peyton to 'sit up' when asked. She's doing pretty well! Actually, she did it today at the vets (just a check up) better than she does at home!! The vet stepped out for a second, and I did it a couple of times to keep her on the table while he was out, and she did it everytime! Wow!! I'm thinking about using a keychain flashlight for Izzy instead of a clicker... but I'm wondering if she'll even notice it? And other than come, sit up, and roll over, anyone have any other easy, cute tricks to attempt to teach a fuzzy? TIA

I was actually going to suggest a flash light. You can see if she notices it. Try flashing it on the ground next to her and reward her. If not try flashing it on your hand. Another thought would be to start with the lights off to make the flashlight more noticeable. I have trained my boys to do trick and I am working on clicker training them so far I am still looking for a good enough treat

So far Mokkun's been my only consistently trainable ferret...but he's been around the longest so I've worked on him longer. He comes to a clicker...my deaf ferrets, if they're awake, have learned to follow him if he starts to run, but if they're sleeping it's a no-go. I like the light idea except they usually sleep under the couch or in dark sleep boxes so the light doesn't reach them. The fun thing I've taught him happened accidentally because I don't have a table to eat at (and my bar's always covered in old mail and things I'm hiding from the ferts) so I often eat sitting on the couch....I've taught Mokkun "Manners". He climbs practically into my plate, I say "Mokkun, where are your manners!" emphasizing the word 'manners', and he gets on the floor, puts his paws on my foot, and waits for a meaty treat off my plate. I love it!

Since this is the first time it's happened I don't think it counts as a trick, but Mokkun makes a great back-up alarm! This morning he crawled into bed with me and started digging at my toes, and when I looked at the clock I realized I had accidentally turned the alarm off instead of hitting the snooze...he woke me up with just enough time to get dressed, feed him and still make it to my 7:30am class on time! The ferret/toe combo wouldn't be so unusual except Mokkun isn't into feet and he never does this when I sleep in on the weekends. I'd be curious to see if he does it again sometime, but I don't want to risk missing my class to find out...I made sure he knew he was a good boy for doing it today

I taught Koda to Stand. We are working/going to be working on these tricks: shake roll over bow (essentially stand then drop then stand) high five (stand shake) I want to try Play Dead if he can pay attention long enough lol stay come (hahahahahaha! yeah right!) as of right now jiggling the doorknob is our version of come (aka make Koda think we are going somewhere so he runs to the door to come with lol)
I had a few others lined up but I can't think of them atm.

if a small keychain flash light doesn't work you could always try one of those red laser type lights...

I taught Fugue how to "Prairie Dog" basically its just "stand up on your haunches". He doesn't do it 100% consistently and he'll only do it if I have a treat. I'd love to be able to teach him how to do tricks like this little ferret, but I just don't have the time or patience lol : www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdkEivFwBAU&videos=wBqCdoeImzQ
