I will be getting a meat dehydrator from a friend. I am wondering, for people who have used them, how your ferrets like the meat.
My plan was to dehydrate organ meats and chicken for treats and as back up food while we are on road trips. Also I was going to use the organ meat to make soups because organs are hard to find around here. So this way I will have a store that, according to the dehydrator guide, can last up to three months. Also, this way I can trick them into eating it since they shouldnt be able to taste it in their soup:).
For those with dehydrators, will this work? What else do you do with your dehydrator?

I"ve only started experimenting with my dehydrator so I"m not much help. I have worked with liver (chicken) and heart (beef). The ferrets really couldn't care less, but they've never had dehydrated meats before. They are ferrets so, they will have to be taught to eat it They might actually like it in the end On the other hand the dog thinks he's died and gone to heaven ciao

They do love their dehydrated bison treats so I will keep my fingers crossed. I figured I could make jerky for myself too

I think meat dehydrators are a rip off lol. I dehydrate meats all the time in the oven for treats for Bailey, and they turn out exactly the same as a friend of mine who bought a dehydrator. I just cut the meat into thin strips, put them on the racks (with a pan under them to catch drips) and leave them on a really LOW temp (like, 150-175) for 5-8 hours (depending on the type of meat) Ive never given any to the ferrets, but Bailey goes nuts for them ;D

The main reason I prefer using a dehydrator is the fact it uses far less electricity than an oven So for me- the savings in the power bill over time is worth the cost!

I agree with sherrylynne. I've both the dehydrator and oven. It's by far cheaper with the dehydrator (which I picked up at a shelter auction, so I win both ways ), which uses minimal amounts of hydro compared to my oven. The product is the same, but I've found my dehydrator actually works faster and I have mulitiple trays so I can actually do more in the dehydator. ciao

The dehydrator is working out really well for me. I overcooked the first batch a bit and the liver didnt work but I am still happy. My next exploit is to wait for flank steak to go on sale and make myself some beef jerky. Then I am going to try chicken jerky for the ferrets and maybe a bit of turkey jerky for the ferrets then for me. Oh the possibilities. I was also going to go through and take out the meat from the freezer that is getting close to its time nd dehydrate before it goes bad.
