If your like me, Nature's Variety is the only commercial raw diet that is readily available at a good price. However, unlike Primal, they really had a fairly limited assortment of flavors: Lamb, Beef, Venison, Chicken (and with luck, you can find Rabbit --which also contains pork). They have just added a new Bison blend! This is awesome for my red meat fanatic ferret, as he can now eat a real variety of red meats. I thought I would share. www.naturesvariety.com/raw_products_bisonNow if they would add another white meat variety I can try since he hates Rabbit and chicken doesn't like his stomach ...

Sweet! My ferrets are on NV and RMBs at the moment and I'm thrilled to hear that they've add a new protein to their product line. The more variety the better! The ferts have never had bison before, so this should be intersting! I wonder if the store I buy their NV from has stocked the Bison yet. Ah I'm so excited!

Hmmmm....I just noticed something. The Bison is labeled "for dogs" and is not viewable under the list of raw diets for cats. Also, on the front of the bag there is only a dog (not a dog and cat) like the other NV products. Weird. Its 95% meat and meat products so I'm still going to feed it to my ferts, but I wonder why its not marketed for cats too. All their other raw diets are for both dogs and cats.

That's a good question Giuli, my guess is because it doesn't have enough taurine to be labeled for cats! My kids all LOVE bison, so I'll be sure to keep this on hand for emergencies

Hmmm......maybe because of the low taurine like spiritualtramp said, but maybe also because bison is known to be a low fat meat which might be too low for cats/ferrets? Maybe that's their view on it, but if you're feeding variety, one lower fat meal shouldn't hurt. Edit: ok, maybe not it's at 10% which is higher than the chicken at 6%

The bison has the highest fat content of any of the NV products. They aren't listing the whole nutritional breakdown on the website yet either. I know it meets AAFCO dog standards--maybe it hasn't finished the process for cats yet? It actually has kidney meat in it too! I find that totally exciting. And, it should be in stores mid-late November. Its like a holiday treat. I found out from the 5 dollar off coupon I was emailed (totally search Nature's Variety coupons, and you can sign up on their "try it" page. They send you coupons every few months!) Paulie will at first think I am poisoning him I figure, and then be stoked and snub his nose at everything else for a week.
