I've been using small cardboard boxes on the sides, with the top flaps covering so that its dark in there. I covered every side of the box in contact paper so if it gets wet, I can just wipe it clean. Now that I'm about to feed raw, should I get something more permanent? I have 2 boxes that are out and used for this purpose. They always take their snacks/treats and sometimes their NV in there to eat it. They no longer go to the boxes to play, they go their to hide and eat. So I suppose they are still ok, their whole body fits in there with the flap shut.

If you want to you can get something more permanant, but I'll be honest I use empty 12pack soda boxes for my crew. I just pitch them when they get nasty

I have just re-made my feeding den and it only cost about £5 (9-ish USD). All I did was:
1. Get a 15-20 litre plastic storage box with lid, this can be any colour but if its black or dark-coloured even better. ($5 although its not often you wont have one that has been lieing around for ages with nothing in it) 2. Go to a scrap yard and get 2-3ft of dark drainage pipe thats about 5" round (or just measure round the biggest fert and add 1.5-2" to that then you have the size round you need) [3-ish dollars or free) 3. Soak the box and knife (if you are using a knife) in hot water or run them through a rinse in the dishwasher. Leave them soaking for about 5 minutes then take them out. 4. Measure what size the drainge tube is round, make a round hole in the end of the storage container to fit the tube. Or you can put the end of the tubing up to where its going to be on the box, use a pen or marker to trace the tube and cut along that. 5. Put the tubing through the hole you just cut and 1. slowly and gently melt them together or 2. tape them round with duct tape to hold them both in place. 6. If the box is clear you can throw a blanket over it or use contact paper around it. I tape newspaper around it (although I dont know what the darkness is like, mine is underground) so its free and easy to take down every few days and dosent provide a good place for breeding bacteria.
Otherwise, its up to you what you use and what works for you!

I made two cat proof feeding dens for Fierra and Ghia in the hopes that I could leave food in there until they finished it. I spent about five minutes grabbing Ghia and throwing her back in the den when she came out with her food and then she seemed to get it. They each seemed to have picked which one was theirs and I thought they were happy with the arrangement. Until one of the cats found a stash under the couch. And then shortly after the other cat came prancing with a chicken wing I'd put in the den earlier. Soooo... what should my next step be? Should I change where the dens are? Right now they're side by side on the lower shelf of the cage. Do I have to monitor all of their eating and put away what isn't finished right away?

This is what I made for Zuko in Katara in the new cage. It is a Sterilite plastic drawer. All I did was cut a small hole in the side with a dremel tool that they can get in and out. I needed something that I didn't have to lift out every day. This works great because all I do is pull out the drawer line it with newspaper stick the food in and close it. To clean it I just pick up all the paper and spray it with vinegar water let it sit for a sec. and wipe it out and repaper it. About once a week I take it out and give it a good soap and water bath and wipe it down with Clorox wipes. I let it dry while they sleep and put it in at the next feeding. I have never had a problem with them taking any of the food out and stashing it. ~Stacy

Here's another cheap option that's been working so far for me... tinyurl.com/d7u9er"lixit igloos"... not the regular igloo-shaped ones. I had one left over from the rats that I came across when cleaning. I use twisty-ties through the holes on the side to secure it to the cage. It pops apart into two pieces for cleaning. It's not huge, so usually there's a ferret butt hanging out the end with crunch, crunch coming from inside. Much better than them eating under a blanket and doesn't take up much space! Plus I always know where to look for leftovers.

I made a den out of a big soda box. But I found that Zombina takes hers behind the cage in the corner(their cage is the super pet deluxe and is in the corner of my bedroom) and she likes to leave her extras there. Vorhees took to eating behind a lid. I had propped up this plastic storage bin lid because they love chasing eachother through the little "tunnel" it made. Well I had put the food dish in front of the opening because zombina was rolling in the food while they played. I came upstairs to eat real fast and went back down. Vorhees had holed up behind the lid and was eating his little heart out.

Both were used on occasion, but they still insist on taking food under the chest of drawers and the wardrobe. I have the same problem - I've learned that my fuzzies like to climb INTO the drawers from the back and stash their food there - and they use separate drawers for each mouse/piece of food Good thing I stopped putting clothes in there

I'm glad to hear it works well, I'll be sure to give it a shot! Thanks!
