Hi! My name is Meredith. I am new to posting here, I finally got around to actually making an account. I have been reading for a couple days now........ Anyway, I have been a member at another ferret board for almost a year, and I heard someone mention this board for going raw/whole food and I though I would check it out. I am married and have 2 sweet kiddos. We have a toy poodle with epilepsy and 1 wild and crazy ferret Gus. I would like to switch Gus over to raw food. I will switch our poodle over too, but she doesn't require any convincing Gus is the most spoiled and pampered member of our family. I hope I won't be breaking any rules or anything, but I am gonna head over to the switching to raw part of the board and jump right in. Thanks for you help! Meredith

Some people before they start the switch like to ask lots of questions before diving in, but some, like yourself, have their mind set! The faster you're ready, the faster we'll get you a mentor, the faster Gus will be on his way to a more natural diet So no, you're not breaking any rules And as far as your poodle if you switch him too, the epilepsy will get better, if not disappear. I actually have a friend that I work with that feeds her 3 dogs raw. Her miniature poodle before switching them had epilepsy (seems to be common in small breed dogs) as well as various other health issues. The epilepsy has almost completely disappeared, and overall, she's much healthier. I don't want to get your hopes up, but it really did helped her poodle. If you have any questions before the switch, please ask away Everyone on this forum is very nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. Anyways, hope to see you around

Hi and welcome to the forum Breaking rules hmmmmm.....naw, I was going to tell you to do that anyway Please prowl the site ask questions, people here are friendly and always willing to offer a helping hand or two . Check out our mentoring section, you will find a lot of really neat tricks on how to convince your finicky little guy, Gus to eat his new and much more nutritionally sound diet. I won't promise you ease of passage on that one, but if you're feeling a little uncomfortable about going it alone (you're never really alone, they're really helpful here) check out the mentoring program. There you will get one on one help to get you and Gus through the rough spots and onto the road to much healthier eating (depending on your mentor, they might even assist you with your puppy) Good luck ciao

Hi, and welcome! So glad you want to get your little ones on a more natural diet What ferretdroogies is referring to(I think!) with the raw and epilepsy is how taurine can help prevent epileptic spiking. If you can level out the spiking, you reduce the chance of a seizure. Some cats and dogs switched to raw have needed less(or no) medication as a result. I'll take a look and see if I can find the studies I looked at. No promises, though, because it's been over a year since I found them last time

You didn't do badly sherrylynne just elaborated on your theme. That's the great thing about this forum. Sometimes, the proof or the theory is shared thus bringing together all the pertinent information then coming up with a logical conclusion ciao

To be quite honest, ferretdroogies, had you not mentioned it- I'd totally forgotten about it! That blasted oldtimer's disease

Welcome aboard! You've come to the right place for switching your ferret to raw. For your dog I'd HIGHLY recommend the Dogster Raw Feeding Forum: www.dogster.com/forums/Raw_Food_Diet They may not have a mentor program but they are armed with spreadsheets and some highly experienced raw feeders. An absolute MUST for the raw fed dog. See you around!
