One of my big worries about feeding raw is the severe lack of freezer space. There is virtually none and I have to play tetrus with everything to make anything fit. Does anyone else have this problem?
I am thinking I might just have to buy a weeks worth of food at a time otherwise this won't work.

I don't think that there is ever enough freezer space . The only way that I can afford to feed everybody is to take advantage of buying in bulk. I have two of the largest freezers (short of going commercial), plus my fridge freezer but that really doesn't count, and I've still run out of room, and had to resort to using a friends freezer while she was out west. You can get small compact apartment freezers that fit into really small places. I think this is an ongoing problem when raw feeding. One of the most economical way to feed raw is to buy either on sale or in bulk both methods usually mean at some point in time (unless you're the ultimate packer, you're going to face space limitations ciao

I have had this problem ever since we got our Hare Today last week. Luckily, we don't cook very often, so there wans't much in there (mostly pizzas ). Once I portioned everything out in little ziplock bags (pushed all the air out), it seemed to help. Your ice cube tray idea might help as well. As far as chunks and RMB's, I would just buy 1-2 weeks worth if you buy from a local place. This will also mean the food won't be frozen long enough to affect the nutritional value (since freezing degrades nutrients to a degree). Hope this helps Edit: They sell freezers small enough for an apartment?? I need one

I've decided to help solve this problem with lack of freezer space by buying for the fuzzies in bulk, and our food weekly

Lol, I'm with Sherry. In fact my freezer space is all fuzzy food, and no human food

No help here... I finally bought a chest freezer. No room in the house, so it had to go to the garage... which at least means it won't actually have to run half the year!

What.....freezers are meant for human foods Like Sherrylynne, the human's foods are purchased on a weekly basis to allow for greater space for deals for all the furkids. A lot of retail outlets carry apt sized freezers...most are about 7 cu ft. and don't take up much more space than a small bookshelf. ciao

Tetris!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!! That's a perfect description!!!! I have to do the same thing.....AND open the freezer VERY carefully!!!!! That being said, if you save up some money and buy a freezer, the money will come back over time since buying bulk is quite a bit cheaper. If you look on Craig's list, you might be able to find something for a pretty good price (or scratch and dent sales).....I don't know if freezers are auto-defrot....otherwise, you may need to defrost between large orders. -just a thought - and thanks so much for the perfect description of what we go through daily for our brats...Tetris!!!! -jennifer

I have a very small freezer. It SUCKS. Its not even a full sized freezer but I somehow manage to cram raw food in there for a dog, a cat, and two ferrets, plus food for myself. If you shop at the grocery store you can buy a few days or a weeks worth of food at a time. It really shouldnt be an issues finding a way to make it fit. Most fresh meats can be kept in the fridge for several days and even up to a week. You can fit some meat in the freezer and some in the fridge. Buying whole prey or raw online is another story. To really make the most of your order when you consider shipping, you HAVE to buy in bulk. I manage to do it even with my small freezer but I really have limited space for my own food when I do this. I can't wait to buy a chest freeze one day! It will be wonderful!

I've been scanning Craigslist, Freecycle, and Uncle Henry's for used chest freezers, but so far no luck. It's a thought though, Jessica! If I can make my current freezer situation work to feed my five plus a kitten, it's doable. And all I have is one of those fridge/freezer combos with the small freezer on top!
