I was emailing S.A.D. Dog Sushi (they sell raw pre-made, ground, RMB's, and organs in the Texas area, but also ship elsewhere). I asked if they could make up a ground mix specifically for our ferrets including a very small amount of veggies or pumpkin without ckicken because Pandora is allergic (she barfs it up in any form). She said sometimes with dogs and cats at least, enhanced chicken (I guess chicken with antibiotics/steroids/hormones?) has been the culprit in many cases, because she has had people swear up and down that their dog or cat is allergic to chicken, but after eating her chicken (which isn't enhanced), they are fine!
I was wondering if trying naturally raised chicken with Pan (instead of commercial raw chicken or grocery store chicken), if she would be ok? I have tried Stella & Chewy's chicken (freeze-dried form) which is supposed to be that way, but she still has mini barfs when she eats it (not as violent as with other sources).

I would guess that many "allergies" to meats are actually allergies or reactions to antibiotics and hormones in the meat. I personally became vegetarian a year ago after learning the kinds of nasties in meats. I personally believe that it wouldn't hurt to try a tiny bit of the chicken mixed in her regular food to see if it affects her, and only if her barf sessions did not affect her long term in terms of eating or being stressed. If she would barf and in a little while be back to normal, I don't see why trying a little would hurt. If she has no reaction, add more, and more until she is eating the chicken only in one serving...without throwing up that is.

She's correct in a way...true protein allergies are rare but they do occur. I"ve found in the years of feeding raw that there are a number of pets who appear to be "allergic" to a protein source. Sometimes, it is indeed the content of the meat or what the animal has been fed. A lot of dogs are allergic or sensitive to chicken that has been fed grain or corn....this relates to a grain sensitivity not a protein sensitivity. This could be the case with your furbaby. The only thing is it does occur. My siamese cat, Samurai is indeed allergic to beef, lamb, goat in fact all ungulates. That is an allergy to a protein source. Being allergic to chicken but not turkey may be a sensitivity. Does that make any sense to you The only way to determine this is to try it. Is there a way you can get a sample of her product to test on your furbaby? ciao

That does make sense Heather! She isn't allergic to other types of poultry, just chicken. So instead of it being a true allergy, it's a sensitivity. And it might be a grain sensitivity if the chicken was fed grains like you said.
I think the S.A.D. dog lady is coming to San Antonio in a few days, I'll get an order of chicken in to test it out with her. I will try Is84's idea to see how it goes.
Thanks guys!

I always thought it was weird that Pan can eat chicken treats like the Catswell ones, but has never barfed after eating them. Oh well, just going to have to try it and hope for no barfs
