My name is Jakk and I am owned by my male ferret EKO.
I am a Biology Major with an love for just about every species of animal. I bred rats (for show and pets) for 5 years before I started college and decided not to breed anymore. Aside from my ferret I also own 6 rats left over from my rattery and a single mouse.
When I moved from California (a ferret hating state) to Pennsylvania I immediately knew I wanted to add ferrets to my household. I knew from the start that I wanted to rescue a ferret in need. I came across Ludwig in a pet shop (let me explain), I was in to pick up some supplie I needed for my other pets and I saw a 20 gallon aquarium with 6 ferrets crammed inside. My partner and I moseyed over at one point and noticed a really dark sable male and asked to see him so we could give him a little love. The sable male was shaky and tried to bite us immediately. Then the lady took out a light colored male that was quite a bit larger than the others. Evidentally he had been living there for at least 6 months and nobody wanted him but they were going to have to euthanize him if he didn't leave the terrible place soon. I walked out 10 minutes later with the boy in tow, there was no way I could leave him behind in that tiny tank awaiting his death. His coat was terrible, his nails had never been trimmed, and his ears were disgusting, nothing that couldn't be fixed though. Despite his condition he was still alert, playful, and social. Within the first week we figured out that our boy was completely deaf and had a huge love for water.
Today, just two months later, EKO is thriving magnificently. He is free-range for around 16 hours a day in our living room, has two digging boxes, a play pond, and tons of toys. He is currently on an organic grain-free veggie-free kitten food as my partner is extremely disturbed by whole prey (what I want to feed him) to the point of getting physically ill at even the idea. I joined to get some more ideas on how to persuade him on feeding whole prey as well as to figure out how to make Ludwig's life the best it can be.
I know that was a bit long
p.s. Ludwig is a single ferret as my partner is also opposed to a pair system...something I also hope to change his mind about.
edit on postscript: my partner has agreed to bring a new fuzz into out life after the holidays are over! YAY!
second edit: name changed from Ludwig to EKO
