Poor little one! Have you talked to your vet about just trying lupron for a couple of months? If he's adrenal, and that's what's causing the problem, it should help. Although having this condition for 3 years seems like it would rule out adrenal, since it's never advanced. What is he eating? I gather he's on kibbles. Could it be an allergy to something in the food? Grains, chicken, or whatever other meat is in it?

No I have not had any vet talk to me about Lupron. My boys eat ground Raw meat everyday. I do leave Kibble in the cage when I am not home, and it EVO cat kibble. They dont eat much of it and the only reason I keep it in the cage is because Skunkers supposedly has Insulinoma and food always has to be present. He has had some seizures before. And I was I could afford to keep freeze dried food in place of the kibble. Also I wash all their bedding in Hypo Allergenic laundry detergent.

Poor baby, have you had blood work done on him recently. I know that Tennessee panel is expensive and it's not always correct but in this case you may want to try it. I would be really tempted to get some preliminary blood work done and possibly some skin scrapings. Lupron is indeed a good trial...if it gets better than you're possibly looking at adrenal, but your furbaby has been having these attacks for awhile??!!. i would have thought that it would have progressed further by now, unless being treated. Is he on pred (this will slow down the progress of the disease)? There are other things that could produce this same type of problem, allergies either contact or food? Thyroid problems...this can cause skin and glandular problems. The hated fleas will also cause skin dermatitis if there is allergic reaction to the bites. ciao

No he does not have fleas and no recent blood work. I have asked a vet about that blood test and he said its not worth it. And he is one of the best ferret vets in my area. He started having seizures about a year ago. I did notice the skin discoloration got better when he was on prednisone. I weened him off it months ago. And yes I would have thought something would have progressed since then and after all these years.

I find that ferret bloodwork is sometimes rather ambiguous but even when the results aren't definitive it often gives you an idea as to what you're fighting. Even homeopaths and natural-paths commission blood work to be done when dealing with an unknown such as what you're dealing with. Even if the blood work only came back with an elevated white blood count it would point you in some possible directions and ruling out others. I don't know what others think but that would be my recommendation. It's worth a try and might give you an answer why this has returned after weaning him off pred. It sounds to me that he was benefiting from the drug. I hate it but I also know it has it's uses in prolonging and easing a ferrets life, when dealing with a number of miserable di-seases. ciao

My first thought would be not adrenal-related but like Heather mentioned, being on preds may just be slowing down the progression of it so this is all you see thus far. It's an odd symptom though to be the only one.
Is the darkening hardened oils?
I would first try using Lupron like Sherry mentioned to rule out adrenal. I agree the Tennessee panel is so expensive but a regular CBC panel might rule out infection if that's a consideration. If you try the Lupron, and it heals up - maybe it is adrenal related. If not, then you're down a considerably smaller amount of money than if you sent out the Tennessee panel.

yeah it is like a hardened oil. Its mostly close to the roots of the fur.

Has the vet ever done a skin scraping to rule out anything that way?
