Early this morning Kenora was put to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night to find blood all over her mouth and her completely unresponsive. I tried getting her to drink a bit of water but I couldnt get her jaws open. I called every emergency clinic that treats ferrets and all of the ones that dont and either they didnt have a ferret vet on tonight or they refused to see her. The only one with a ferret vet on staff was over an hour away and I didnt think she would make it that long, she was in alot of pain. I ended up calling the vet that I work with and she met me at the clinic. After examining her she didnt think IV fluids would help anything and that it would be best to put her to sleep. She didnt even fight the IM injection of sedative.
I have a huge hole in my heart from this little girl who came a stole it away. She was such a special little girl and I cant imagine I will ever find someone like her again. I will miss you Sugarplum. I hope that you find peace where you are and you can gladly keep that piece of my heart you stole.

The Dr. I work with is going to do an informal necropsy for me. Kerry said that she wouldnt require a formal one since Kenora clearly was in pain and the CT diagnostic lab wouldnt give me her body back if I bring her there. The doc isnt a ferret doctor but she will be able to tell normal from abnormal and hopefully shed some light. And I will bring her body home with me and bury her in the state forrest near where we camp.

Noooo, it's just not fair. Poor little one. A candle is lit to guide her little paws on to her next great adventure. Run free little one, no fear or pain holds you now. You get to bounce and play, and tustle with the many who have gone before, there are so many little playmates. Sweet green grasses and leaves are now your bed. You get to play in bubbling streams and the soft breezes gently ruffle your fur....and for a moment you remember a hand that used to touch, pet and caress...soft kisses, and gentle words and deep in your little heart you know...that hand will again touch you, someday...so you snuggle down and wait. Goodbye for now little Kenora...Goodbye ciao

Out of curiosity do you have an air conditioner and what temperature is it where they are kept?

We did a necropsy. It turns out she had a blockage. Between one ferret vet and two small animal vets, no one suspected. Some of her symptoms fit but others did not. I still cant help but beat myself up over it. If I had suggested we rule it out from the beginning then none of this would have happened. I will learn from this and hopefully be able to prevent it in the future, it kills me that it cost kenora her life. It all happened so fast.

I am so sorry to hear about the less of Kenora! These little ones suffer from blockages too easy and sometimes they just don't show up on the X-ray. Ugh, but you can't doubt yourself. You could have just as easily put her through a needless surgery and she could have had a reaction--you just don't know. I'll send happy thoughts and she can play chasing games with Ebony the gerbil at the bridge and play with Sharkie the ferret-like cat who loved every other creature. She'll be cared for there. Give lots of love to the rest of your business for me.

That's terrible :[. Don't beat yourself up. It's obvious you loved her and she loved you. Kenora wanted you there when she passed.

Oh My God. I'm so, so sorry to hear about this. You cannot beat yourself up over this...there are times when you just cannot tell what is going on - especially with ferrets. You are an awesome ferret mom, and Kenora knows this. we all have babies waiting for us at the bridge. Kenora is there for you, and she'll always be in your heart.
Like I always remnd myself when I lose a baby, the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - this is so true for ferrets.

I am still mourning her loss. Everytime Newt chuckles I think it is Kenora and go try and find her in the blankets. I took a mini vacation (although I call to check on the kids every night) and it has been helping alot.
Unfortunatly Newt is starting to get bored. They werent bonded so I know it isnt depression. He gets one on one play time for close to three hours each day plus out of cage time from 7 am until 1 am and I rotate his toys every few days to make them "new". I have been talking with my breeders and we agreed that the best decision would be to get a friend for him. Its going to be really hard but my heart is big enough if not a little broken at the moment. I dont really know how ready I am but Newt is getting worse and I dont want him to become destructive or depressed from the boredom despite everything I am doing for him.

If he needs a little friend, that that's the best thing to do for him.

I agree. I am currently talking to two breeders about adopting an older spayed female, at least a year. We will see where it goes. I am, hoping that by the fandango in September I will be okay enough to have a new little girl running around.
