Pork has been out of thier diet for at least a month now and no changes yet I have tried everything, from oatmeal bathing to wiping down before I hold them and nothing seems to work at least for me I also learned that I developed a cat allergy as well so I am guessing its their dander that is irritating to me, but its strange since the irritation is just localized to my face (but I do kiss them alot and kinda rub my face on them ) It just looks like eczema on my eyelids and around my mouth, sometimes it pops up around my neck as well but I havent been holding them around my neck as much so it has calmed down there....but I cant stop kissing them! I just wish there was a natural approach for my skin that worked, I have tried everything from calendula to pachouli and I just cant find anything that seems to work well!

Oh, yes, we went through that whole routine. They got a bath first, then every time they come out of the cage, they get a complete wipe down with a damp cloth. I even rinse the cloth between ferrets. They also get a quick wipe partway through play times. It's made no difference at all. The only things we've found that alleviate the symptoms somewhat are Benedryl, and the ceremide cream. Bloody expensive treatments, I'll tell ya . He also washes off wherever they've come in contact with him as soon as he puts them down. No luck. Ours haven't had pork for about 3 weeks(ran out, haven't bothered replacing it yet). I'll wait another month, then try cutting out something else. There has actually been a very interesting discussion going on about this type of allergy on the FML. It seems sometimes people will react to either intact ferrets, or adrenal ferrets, simply because of the hormones released. We are holding out on the very slim hope that after Sinnead has her adrenal surgery in Aug., that his allergy might...moderate a wee bit.

Wow! It turns out hubby's allergy isn't to the ferrets at all It's to dust mites, of all things. He works with me some of the week, cleaning houses(really helps with the 3000+ sq.ft homes!), and we had a short day one week, so he didn't take his creams with him, as it was only going to be 3 hours. He hadn't handled the ferrets at all that morning, but by the end of the 3 hours, his eczema was as bad, if not worse, than ever. We both realized that the vacuum hose was touching the same areas on wrists, arms, legs, and neck, as the ferrets do! With the static from the vacuum running, it attracts dust. And the house we did that day is the dustiest one we have. He stayed off work for a week, kept handling the ferrets, and the eczema just kept healing up! I'm thinking since our house was also very dusty(hey- I clean all day, don't feel like doing a lot when I get home ), the fuzzums were also picking it up from the carpet. So yeah, we have to vacuum daily now, but he can handle them at will- and they love it . So does he.

Thats great he figured out what it was and that it wasnt the ferrets!!!! You know whats actually very funny, is that I just found out last week what my true allergy was to....it wasnt to my ferrets either!!!! It was to my makeup (I use bare minerals, and it was the bismuth something or other that gave me my rashes!! I kept changing my makeup and it persisted so thats y I thought it wasnt that but it seems that mineral is in many brands of makeup!) I am so happy we both figured out the issue, and that it wasnt our ferrets!!!

Wow Sherry I just caught up on this, that's great news. I'd be heartbroken if Cliff was indeed allergic to the ferrets. Luckily, he's just allergic to dirty homes! It is remarkable what people are really allergic to and blame on pets/foods/etc. Interesting interesting!

Oh, we definitely are! He was so heartbroken. The ferrets would ask to play and cuddle, and all he could do was use longer toys with them, like a towel, or teaser toy. You would not believe how much he's been cuddling them since . Making up for lost time, I suppose!
