This is something I have been meaning to ask about for a while now, but have kept forgetting... To cut a long story short, we took the ferrets out hunting in the 08 season during the bad ice (at parts in ponds it was 5-7" thick, none of that melting during the day!) with a seasoned ferreter and before we went to the field we were stood in his kitchen talking and he put into a flask 1 cup of warm goats milk and an egg, I thought, ok....a little strange but there we go. We got to the field and found a stretch of burrows, we lay out nets then put in 3 ferrets, once all rabbits had been bolted we put the ferrets back into the box, dispatched rabbits, packed them up then took the ferrets out again and got the flask out, put the milk/egg mix into a bowl then added about half a cup of frozen (Well, by this time it was mainly just "frosted"...not frozen, but no thawed?? ) beef into it and the ferrets tucked in. He said he fed it everytime he went ferreting (every 2-4 days) at the end of the day to warm them up a little, the beef was just a treat. I had never thought about feeding frozen before, is there any problems with this or is it just "not natural" ?

I thought I'd read that some people do offer food still mostly or completely frozen, so that it keeps longer while sitting out? Mine obviously enjoy thawed and warmed, but they'll still go at it if it's cold or a little hard in the center and don't show any discomfort, so I hope somebody else has an opinion.
My first thought when I read the topic "frozen foods" was fish food! My tanks get a thawed cube of bloodworms or mysis shrimp or the like a few times a week. The shrimp is rather fragrant when it melts, which gave me the thought that my boys might like it... they do like stinky things. So now they get fish food treats occasionally.
Also, "bad ice" made me smile... the ice on our lake has finally almost disappeared and maybe it will be spring soon! Around here it can be over a foot thick during the winter.

Lol, anything over 2" here is considered "bad ice"!! The country would be at a stand still if we got 1'+ of ice!!

My guys love frozen treats, especially in the summer. Ratcicles, and mousecicles...the guys have a blast eating these. They also keep longer if they get stashed but it's rare that they do stash them. They munch on them frozen and really enjoy the treats. I don't think our ice is a foot thick here (it finally all melted off the lake now, though there's still snow in the deep forest) but it's thick enough that they drive their big trucks on it from one side of the lake to the other and they also drive to their cottages across the ice. ciao
