Now that my man and I are almost settled into our new home (WOOHOO!) we are taking in my parents' cat. My family got JAWS when I was in 5th grade. He is a black and white, long-haired tuxedo male with three legs and a grudge against the world. Yes, his real name is JAWS and yes, he has earned that name!
Jaws is currently living at my parent's house and is mostly an outdoor cat. He always has access into their garage through a cat door, and is SOMETIMES let inside, mostly just in the winter. My parents refuse to feed him (and our other cat) anything but grocery store kibble, and my mom buys "whatever is cheapest". I have fought and fought with my mom over this matter but have not been able to get her to budge. Luckily, now that we have our own home, my parents are letting me take Jaws!
I have been planning on having him move in for several months, so I brought him to the vet in January for an exam and vaccines. The vet (to my surprise) said he looked good and only had a pound or so to lose, but I think he could stand to lose more. I also had him groomed a few weeks back so he is mat free and ready for regular brushing that I plan on giving me---no matter how much he yowels!
I want to get him off of the yucky kibble right away and onto a new diet. Ideally I would like to feed him a rotation diet of raw frankenprey and NV raw. Considering his age, I have very low expectations. It would be a miracle for him to be eating RMB, so that is only a dream. I am anticipating a very low, slow struggle with him, but I am okay with that. Luckily he loves canned food, so that will make for an easy start.
Here is my plan:
1. Switch him cold-turkey from kibble to a high quality canned food as soon as we get him.
2. Slowly transition from canned food to mushed up NV raw food (all meat types).
3. Slowly add in tiny chunks of raw meat, slowly increasing the size until he is eating large pieces of boneless meat and (hopefully) organs.
4. Work him up to RMB lick Cornish Game Hen and Chicken wings, feeding him about 50% raw frankenprey and 50% NV raw.
Frankly, I will be more than pleased when he is switched to just NV raw because it is balanced and at least it will be raw of some sort. His teeth would benefit from crunching on RMB, but again, "no expectations, no disappointments"!
Any suggestions, comments, links, help, etc. is greatly appreciated! I am hoping to get him moved in within the next week. Tonight I am picking up some canned food for him, some sort of grain-free variety, probably EVO.
Wish us luck, I will post pictures of the beast soon!
