How do you clean the ferrets ears, and which product do you use? You see, I have never cleaned my ferrets ears, but have noticed I really need to, they smell. I have just learned recently that it is necessary, Please share your methods! Thankyou

If they smell, there could be a problem, but not necessarily, could be just really, really dirty. Have they been checked for ear mites? I don't remember the name of the product, I get at a natural pet store. Put a little bit of the liquid in their ear, & massage the ear to help loosen the debris in the ear, then take a q-tip & *gently* roll the q-tip in the ear, be sure not to go too deep into the ear. It should be light brown, orange or reddish in color. You can also dampen the q-tip with the cleaner instead, & then cleaning the ear, but applying the liquid in the ear first, can help break up the wax better.

If what comes out of the ear is black, you'll have to have the vet check them for mites.

If you have good close-up vision, you can put the ear wax on a white piece of paper and look for these beige/cream/off-white little buggers that crawl across the paper (be sure to squish them all - and the ear wax- to make sure none of them escape. )A magnifying glass may help, but I can see ear mite without any trouble at all.
Darker ear wax and smelly ears do not always mean lice are present, but you'll want to rule out infection as well as mite. Fert ears can smell if not kept pretty clean. There are also a lot of musk glands around to neck/ears anyway. It's the nature of the beast. -jennifer

I use DFS ear clens pads (surprise). I'm not sure how you'd do it without scruffing! A good scruff and a massage of the ears with the pad, and we're good. They seem to take it pretty well, at least compared to guilt trip they give me after teeth brushing.
