That's basically what I used, different brand but play sand that you can buy for sand boxes. I used it inside. Every now and then I add water to it as it gets very soft and powdery. It makes them sneeze The stuff that they're playing in outside is just regular dark loam soil that I bought when I started making up my gardens. There was some left over so the fuzzies got it. ciao

Right now I'm using aquarium gravel in a dig box and they really like it. It makes a lot of noise when they dig which I guess adds to the fun. The stuff I had was natural rock, not that colored stuff. In the mix were some bigger rocks that Ghia likes to push around with her nose. Also I can wash the rocks if say... a cat were to urinate in it.

Thought I'd mention another favorite dig "box" around here. A big cardboard mailer tube stuffed with tissue paper. They go crazy digging the paper out of that.

It so funny how dig boxes represent how much like Preschoolers ferrets are. I've been subbing in PK and they all have sensory tables. Its a dig box for little kids. However, it gives me great ideas for ferrets.
Like, hello, foraging cups in the dig box and hiding other treasures could be so much fun. Put shiny things in it that are new they can stash and let them dig them out. Or, play in the dirt with them (messy but I bet it would be worth it) If I had more room I'd make a dig box now--but that may wait until I'm on my own again.
Besides--when I offer Paulie a dig box or a water box he tries to stash it ... Seriously, he yanks it away and stuff goes everyone. Funny, priceless, and messy. My parents would not appreciate dirt/rice/beans/sand everywhere on the floor. Hehehe.

I found out just a bit earlier that Ozzy can already get into the smallest cat litter box I have (it was in his room). Because of that, the litter box will become Ozzy's dig box once I can get some rice to fill it with.
It's one of the cheaper covered cat boxes that you can find at Walmart. It's pretty tall also so the chances of rice being flung out are pretty low. To be honest, I wasn't expecting Ozzy to be able to pull himself inside it for at least another month... At least the cats can function with only 2 boxes between the 3 of them... Lucky for me, the cats weren't really a fan of that box in any case so it won't be missed unless I miss a couple of days of scooping their larger boxes.

My parents would not appreciate dirt/rice/beans/sand everywhere on the floor. Hehehe. When we had a pair of foster fuzzies inside (they were very timid, so lived free roaming the lounge for a while) we gave them a dig box and because we too didnt want dirt/sand/rice etc all over the floor, we used cardboard bedding for small animals: Or shredded tissue bedding for small animals: Both of which worked very well, created little-to-no mess and were very cheap and easy cleaned .

What great ideas! And besides you can always switch it up a bit. When the furries get tire of one material put something new in there and newness! LOL I am prob going to get one of the covered litter boxes for titter and start experimenting! I bet she'll love it!

While were on the subject on Dig boxes, I just got a sandbox for my guys and Jack keeps getting sand in his mouth. Should I be worried? It's like he's eating it or something...

What about putting birdseed in a digbox? I'm assuming that if it had sunflower seeds in it there could be a blockage issue, but what about the smaller seeds? I'm going to be getting some for another project and it would be quite easy to just get a larger bag of seed and put some in a box for the ferts to play with. I don't think that it could swell up in their tummies the way instant rice does and I use plain newspaper in their litterbox so I doubt there will be any confusion as to that issue, but I was hoping to get someone elses ideas on the subject before I head out to the store next week.

To be honest, I'd be hesitant about using seed for a dig box, in case they decide to eat it. All it will do(at best), is pass right through their system. At worst, it could cause some major digestive upset.
