As with my mouse colony, I am starting over. I found homes for all my rats and got a new rat, an agouti berk named Sasha. She is very wary of humans and is not in any way hand tame. She is about 2 months old, maybe a bit older, but I'm going to wait 2 months before attempting to breed her. She's got good weight on her and should be getting a cagemate over the next month or so. I plan on getting a male sometime this Spring when she's big enough and beginning my rat colony. I need to either find a good supplier of the lab block I use, or I'm going to be feeding my rodents a raw diet. (I forgot to mention this in my mouse thread.) I will go into more detail in another thread. Lab block costs me $55 per 50lbs and 50lbs lasts me about 1.5-2 months.

We got Sasha a friend, but she is currently in quarantine for the next few weeks. She is a 5 week old cream hood named Kanji. This morning both girls showed me just how mad they are at me. I tried giving them treats and both bit me. Sasha broke skin. Kanji didn't. In three months time I will be getting two males for them, and an additional two rats, depending on if my husband says I can start breeding feeders again. While in the store, I found this beautiful male (he was an interesting color. A super light gray hood) but decided not to get him. Now that I have found my camera memory card, pictures of Sasha and Kanji will be taken tonight. I will post them tomorrow.

We will be picking up two males from a friend who can no longer keep them. We are taking a black self male and a berkshire male. I'm not sure how old they are. They've been kept as pets. Kanji will be joining Sasha soon as she is not displaying any signs of illness (just depression from being alone). Sasha is itching for a friend. Hopefully in 3 months time I can be expecting some rat babies.

I have some bad news. We had a snow storm here in Virginia over the weekend and on Sunday night, at 11:30pm, we got the call from a friend who was checking on our animals that our apartment had lost power. He didn't know how long the power had been out, but he said it was chilly in the apartment. We rushed over as safely as we could (roads sucked) and our first priority was the snakes as they would not survive another hour or two in temperatures like that. We got them over to my mother in laws house and went the next day to get the remaining animals. When we got there two of our rats had died. We lost Kanji and a blue self male we had gotten just a few days before. Sasha and the two new adult males we had gotten from a friend were fine, if not a bit chilly. We rushed everyone over to my mother in laws house and got everyone warmed up. Everyone is doing fine now. I am quite sad about Kanji and the blue male. I think because they were so young (5-6 weeks old) and didn't have much body mass they were not able to maintain their body heat. Sasha was cold but fine. The two males had snuggled up together to keep warm. So now we have just Sasha and the two boys. I'll be going out this week to get Sasha a female friend.
I will be better prepared for storms next time. Hurricane season is the next hurdle, so I will be preparing for that this spring.
