Hi Im a first time ferret owner and first time mice breeder. I had my first litter of mice a few days ago. through trial and error this is what ive found works best for me.
I started out with 1 male and 2 females ina 10 gallon. I had to keep this in my room and the smell was horrible and the 10 gallon a hassle to clean out every couple of days so...
i bought a wire cage with a pull out bottom i line with newspaper I throw toilet paper in for bedding with a toilet paper tube. this makes bi-daily cleaning a breeze followed by a weekly thorough scrub down. it is a bit small to house 3 mice for big lengths of time so i keep the 3 housed in there 1-2 weeks.
by then i am sure the females are pregnant and i transfer the females into a 10 gallon. for substrate i use this coconut bark husk stuff. the females do not smell at all. they were in there upwards of a week before birthing now pushing a week after giving birth without a cleaning yet and no smell.
Since its not to hot or cold i keep the single caged boy in the garage. boys stink.
now that my pinkies are almost a week ive got 2 new females in the wire cage with the boy. in a few days those 2 females will go into their own 10 gallon. by the time they give birth i will have 2 litters of fuzzies or hoppers and 2 other litters of pinkies.
now i have age variance with live feeding for my kit.
so far ive been feeding them bird seed mix with these big round brown pellets for rats. im going to soon start adding fruit and mealworms to their menu.
hope this helps.
