I went to take care of the mice tonight and suddenly ALL my females are HUGE and PREGNANT. I am amazed because it seemed like they ballooned up almost overnight! I pulled the 10 gallon tank back out and set my 2 male mice back up in their because they have obviously completed their mission I have never bred mice before but judging by their size, I can't imagine I will have to wait more than a few days before I have a tank full of pinkies! Heck, it looks like I will have Christmas babies this year! What a nice dinner for my ferrets Any suggestions for pinkie care? I've heard to not get into their cage for 2-3 days after the babies are born so the moms won't freak out. I just cleaned out their tank nice and well so it won't need to be cleaned until next Sunday. I gave them an extra big bottle of water which will last at least a week, and overflowed their already over sized food dish so that will keep them happy for a few days. Any other suggestions? Oh, also, I caught two rats doing the nasty the other day! WooHoo!

Yay!! I don't know about mice, but with rats they usually blow up in the last week. As for pinky care I don't know about mice pinkies, but rat pinkies you can handle them after 24 hours. Mom will pretty much take care of her babies by herself.

Pregnant mice are the funniest things ever. Once they balloon up they look like a beachball with legs. I had this one female that was so huge, she waddled. I have pictures of her somewhere. As far as pinky care, don't touch the babies for a few days after birth. Female mice are VERY protective over their babies, at least in the first few days and any sign of danger and they will kill and eat the young. So leave them alone for 2-3 days only going in to feed and water. After mom has settled into her duties as a momma mouse, you can start picking up the babies. I have a female right now sitting on a litter and she doesn't mind me picking up the babies.

Thanks guys. They look so goofy waddling on their wheel! After I wait a few days, do I need to worry about the mommas biting me when I mess with their babies?
I have six mice each having their first litters... I hope things turn out well and none of the mommas flip out on the babies... I should have about 60 babies within the next week! GOOD GOSH.

If you only have two, there are plenty more on the way. As far as the mother's biting, it all depends on the mouse. I've had momma mice that would try and get me when they were on the other side of the tank and I've had girls that would just sniff me while I messed with the babies. You'll have to do trial and error with yours. You could invest in a pair of gloves and use them until you know who will bite and whole won't. Of course, they could always change their mind from litter to litter.
Post pics if you can.

I checked the mice out this morning. It looks like 4 out of 6 mice have had their babies and there are about 20 babies from doing a quick head count. YAY

I think all six of my females have given birth now, but their may be a few pinkies still inside the last female. There are about 30 babies in the tank! WOOHOO! I know that isn't too many, but it's the first litter for all of my mamas.

I've heard that their first litter will usually be small, so that was no surprise. Yesterday I fed one fat pinkie to the ferrets. Ernie and Ramona made a pathetic attempt at killing it (more like chewing it alive) so I gave it to Didjer who just about swallowed it it one bite! Also, for the past week or two I have been hearing a lot of squeaking from the rats. I am almost sure they have been mating but I have only SEEN it once since they like to get busy in their tube. Yesterday I moved the males into their own cage in hopes that I will get rat pinkies in the next week or two. When rats are pregnant, is it as obvious as with mice?

Thanks BigSis.
Today we did a count of the mice babies. There are 25 and all the mommies shouldn't be birthing any more. More of them a blackish in color (still no fur), a few will be dalmations (like 3 of the moms) and a few are really teeny and pink still.
