Hello,
It's nice to meet you. Sounds like you have a rather large amount of meat to buy beings your raw feeding the dogs to. I envy you, I wouldn't be able to handle some of the things people give raw fed dogs (I.E. Green Tripe) Icky....
Now as for the slaughter houses/butchers shops. I'm not to sure about any around here. I'm not even sure if there are any in my town or anywhere close. However we do have stores who have a butcher on spot and sell fresh cuts of meat. I was wondering if maybe they might be willing to hold back some stuff for me. I've heard that a lot of the organs aren't used and they are good for meals? Perhaps that would be something good to ask for.
All questions asked it's time for an update!
Today hoppers were fed and devoured. These guys know that mice are food apparently, they don't care how big or furry. These were given this morning for breakfast. Tonight I made them some duck soup. This is my own recipe:
1 cup pheasant 3 jars chicken baby food 1 cup water
It turned out a little thin so I think next time I will add a little more meat to it but they did eat it. I filled their bowl and came back a couple hours later and it was gone. I got the pheasant from family who hunts them on their property. We got 2 raw birds, which will be used for the boys meals and one smoked...my meal lol.
I gave hearts for a treat again tonight. I tried gizzards but they don't seem to like those whole, only when they are in the duck soup so I just gave them hearts which they love.
I was also wondering, if it is safe to feed unsalted packaged bacon. My uncle has been buying big boxes of it and we have way to much so I was thinking about trying to make a soup with some....

We don't ever buy meat for the dogs (would if we had to) but if they ate a full raw diet they would eat 1277.5 pounds of meat a year.. But we are working up to being able to feed more (We are actually buying a second chest freezer). October through May is when the bulk of the slaughtering us done. We also have verbal contracts with farmers so we can collect their cull animals and our relationship with those farmers is now more of a friendship. And one can't forget, we are actually going to be put on a list to collect freshly killed deer that have been hit by vehicles. Now, for the things you could ask for that the butcher shops probably will Not sell: Lungs (these are RARELY used) Spleen Rocky Mountain oysters (IF your willing to deal with those) Kidney Brain (once again.. IF your willing to deal with those), But only lamb/pig brains can be given away or sold unless you live outside of the USA. Lung is fed as meaty meat and all else is concidered organ. A diet should consist of roughly 10% organ. That is great progress, and also very quick. Your guys sound like happy campers! They are probably wondering why you didn't offer these sooner! The duck soup sounds good. I wouldn't have added that much baby food but if your adding more meat to it in the future that will take care of it. Is the bacon smoked or cured? Or is it just pork belly? If its not had anything done to it (Smoking, Any seasoning or curing) then it would be just fine! -~Ketlin

Sounds good to me. I am very surpised that the boys are switching over so easily, concidering their age. Be glad, too. Weezer was very hard to switch and he is younger.

How do they handle the bone? Some ferrets are difficult to get to eat it.

My boys love the bones and it doesn't take them long to have them gone either. Honestly I see them crunching that bone into little pieces and it makes my teeth hurt lol. I gave the boys venison for breakfast this morning, this came from my uncle (Not the one I'm living with lol) and it was butterflies, atleast that's what he calls it, he says it's the ribeye of the deer world lol. They got a small pieced (cut into pieces, not like small pieces just, it isn't a whole bird anymore lol.) pheasent....

Sounds good!!! Your guys are doing Awesome!
Could you give me your menu for a week so I can know roughly of what it would consist of? I think you are ready or almost ready to graduate. I just need to make sure. All you've got to do now is feed roughly 4 days of raw meaty bones (chicken, turkey, rabbit, etc,), 2 days of boneless and 1 day of organ per week.. You've also got to feed atleast 3 different species of meat total, to give them variety.. Once you work up to that point and post a menu showing all of these things you'll be ready to graduate.

Is the venison, salmon and pheasant you are feeding pre-frozen to kill parasites? I freeze my wild game for 3 or 4 weeks prior to feeding.
When you feed liver, How much do you give them? Since you feed whole prey every day you really only need to feed a very small amount of organ.

All my wild game came from my families freezers as they were clearing them out to make room, my uncle normally feeds the venison(lungs and such) to his dog but he passed away due to cancer.
I give them a couple small cubes of liver, I cut it up not a lot really but they do like it.

That is good. It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the wild game. It makes me feel bad because when I bring home fresh meat the dogs and ferrets give me those baby looks but I can't give them any!
I will get Guili to take a look at your menu and see if its time for you to graduate. Is so, You can still PM me at Any time!! I will still help you if you need it.
