I'm so sorry! I'm really glad you have a good sense of humor. Looking more closely I certainly do see they are chinchillas - and very cute ones at that. Don't worry about it! I can understand how a person gets them confused through a pic, what drives me nuts is when a person stares right at the animal in my hand and still calls it a rat (the chins AND the ferrets!). Back to the oatmeal - the first (and actually the only) place that I read about it was in one of the last printed issues of Ferrets Magazine. It was submitted by a reader that used it for her adrenal ferret(s). I'm not sure if it's used by a lot of ferret owners out there or not, but I love it and plan on spreading the word about it! Cristina - See, isn't it the greatest?! One of mine, Dodger, also has slightly coarser hair than the others and it works wonders for him. I had used this a couple times last winter, then kind of forgot about it until about a month ago when I noticed them itching more again. I used it again and was like, "Oh wow, I forgot how great this stuff was!" I don't plan on ever using shampoo on them again. I'm glad you like it! Oh, and Amy, I found that pic of Jasper on one of the cats. It's not the best view, but you can tell it's a cat (that would be Precious - my mom's cat) he's standing on. I'm not quite sure how to post a pic on here, so here's a direct link to the photo: i283.photobucket.com/albums/kk281/xbeautifulxxdreamerx/my%20chinchillas/jasperonprecious.jpg

Thanks for posting the pic, Jessica! LOL That is one big, gorgeous chinchilla! I think it is really cool how they take dust baths but don't know too much about them in general. Since my humidifier/dehumidifier has been broken, we all (ferrets and humans included) find our skin gets dry and itchy so I'll definitely being trying the oatmeal soak soon. I'm going to try and soak without rinsing like you do/recommend. People unfamiliar with ferrets do have a tendency to guess that it's a rodent-maybe for dinner!

I'm going to have to give the oatmeal a try. Fierra's fur has gotten much softer and shinier since the diet change, but it's still coarser than Ghia's fur. Fierra sorta likes playing in water, but prefers showers and Ghia freaks the heck out when I put her in even a dry bathtub. I think their previous owner over bathed them. Maybe I can manage an oatmeal infused sponge bath. A little is better than none, right?

To save money, because Aveeno can get costly couldn't you just use Oat Flour? It's already ground, and assumes colloidal properties when wet. Has any one tried this?

Oh, and what about adding whole milk powder? I don't know, might try it, wanted an opinion before I did.

To be honest, mine might get one shampoo bath a year, if that, unless they've gotten into something really bad, and usually just water will get it off.

I'm the same way when it comes to bathes usualy just fill up a tub and use plain ole water. However my Abbey, has an Adrenal Problems, and starts geting the shot next month. I'm hoping Oat Flour helps alleviate her scratching and dry skin. Poor Babes. I will let you know tommorrwow how the flour pans out.

What about just plain old oats?

Once she's started on the lupron, and it takes effect, her itching will go way down, or it should. It did with both of mine. Salmon oil in her diet will help, too, since it helps to keep the skin more supple.
