Well I finally got ahold of my ferret Vet. I start shadowing him this Tuesday (1-5pm) I will do this once a week, every week for this sememster. In January I plan to chart out a different school schedule so that I am available 9am-5pm and then I will (hopefully) apply to the vet hospital where I will be shadowing for a Kennel Tech position. I hope that Dr. Weltig will be able to put in a good word for me after a semester of shadowing.
I tried applying to a few more vet hospitals but all of them were unable to hire me because of my current availability. Oh well, hopefully things will change next semester but atleast this semester I am able to shadow.

Have you considered passing off some of the responsibility of this site just to lighten your stress level?

I have the mentors that help me out (that GOD), its not really the site that stresses me out, its the fact that I'm unemployed and that I dont have in-clinic experience yet. Luckily thought i start shadowing my vet tommorow, and hopefully next semester I can get a hands-on job at the hospital. (fingers crossed) (funny enough I'm stressed because I feel that I'm not doing ENOUGH, not that I'm doing too much ) Maybe I'm crazy? lol.

Well today went really well Dr. Weltig's first appointment was a small dwarf hamster. He had hairloss and crusty skin on his head so Dr. Weltig did a scraping of the skin and put it on a slid and we went into the lab and looked at it under a microscope. It was mites (demodex (sp?)) so they gave the little hamster a teensy-weensie amount of topical ivermectin to treat the mites. Next was a 3 year old, female rat. She had large tumors on her the size of tennis balls. She had to be euthenized. We had to sedate her with isoflurine and then Dr. Weltig had to inject the pentobarbital directly into her heart. He said they do this because on animals as small as a rat it is hard to find a vein to put an IV in (and thus administer the euthenasia drug that way). It was sad but the rad was obviously in great pain and not lookin to good. Next, there was a rabbit that had been to the E-vet a few days earlier. The rabbit had diarehha (sp?) earlier in the week when he was outside and someone a fly came and laid maggots in the dirty fur near his bum. The poor bunny had the runs and maggots on his bottom. The E-vet cleaned this up (thank god) so I didnt get to see magots coming out of this rabbit's butt, but Dr. Weltig did a check up on the bun and gave him some more antibiotics. He compounded it with pina colada mix! I thought that was pretty funny. When he said it was Pina Colada flavored I thought he meant a special flavoring made just for that, but then he opened up the exotics fridge and there was a bottle of pina colada mix Then there was surgery on a lepord gecko who had a large absess on the left side of his head just below his eye. Dr. Weltig sedated him with isoflurine gas and then cleaned up the abscess and then sutured it up. Then he gave him an injection of pain medication. Last was a green cheek conure (bird) and an african grey parrot (bird). They came in for wing clipping, nail trimming, and beak filing (not to make the beak less sharp, but to file off some of the rough skin (?) on the beak). It was a long day and it was very interesting indeed. I had my phone on silent the whole time I was there. When I walked out of the hospital and checked my missed calls and messages I had gotten a call from a company that the vet hospital hires to handle their staffing needs. I had applied to this vet hospital for a receptionist position a while back but after trying and trying to contact someone to follow up my app. I just figured "oh well" they obviously don't care. So I was very suprised that I was getting a follow up on my application. I need to call them tommorow at 8am. Hopefully I will get an interview and get hired! So that was my day. All in all I'd say it went pretty well I go back next tuesday to shadow again. I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes.

Well I go in tommorow morning at 9:30 am to interview with the staffing agency that the animal hospital has hired to do their hiring. If all goes well the staffing agency will send my info and thoughts on my interview to the hospital. From there its up to the hospital to decide if they like me. If they do then I have an interview with the hospital admin. and if that goes well I get hired. I'm really nervous and I hope I get this job! It pays $0.85 per hour MORE then my last job and unlike my last job (working overnight at target doing stocking) I will actually LOVE this job (working in a vet hospital as a receptionist). I'm hoping, and wishing, and praying that I get this job! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Oh CONGRATS on your interview! You're going to blow them away.
I feel so bad for those ill animals. I never thought all those things could happen to these little creatures we invite into our homes.

I'm so excited for you!! I think you'd make a great vet. My fingers are crossed for this job.
I'm planning something similar. I have nointerest in being a vet, my ultimate goal is to be a dog trainer in several fields including human remains detection. I'm hoping to go study and become a vet tech, as well as dog trainer and be a vet assistant in the mean time. They usually don't require actual schooling, although its not much pay and I am betting the responsibilities could be done by anyone. I figure I need to get a real job soon. My savings over the years isn't really being replenished thanks to pets & rescues. =|
