Something else to think about - you said that she responded when you used your foot to make the toy squeak - is it possible that she can feel the vibration on the floor - sort of a "felt hearing"?
We have several BEWs that are deaf to varying degrees. Tommy will sometimes respond to sounds on the floor (foot tapping, toy falling, etc.)
I also read awhile back that some have theorized that "flat ferret" behavior might be linked to sending vibrations through the jaw.
Anyway, it sounds like a new world has opened up for her - congrats!

That's a interesting concept. I hadn't really thought about it but I can give you a possible example of a similar behaviour. Fun-Go has a strange behaviour that he does when he's playing in the tubes, the carpet tubes in particular. I noticed when they're playing in the carpet tubes....Captain Jack (who can hear) will tilt his head listening to the brats he's chasing run down the tube. Fun-Go will lean his head against the tube actually tracking by feel. ciao

Actually, I was sitting on the floor with Sinnead, on the top landing of the stairs, pushing on the toy with my hand. Those are apparently the rules for that particular game Lucrezia was at the bedroom door Up 3 stairs, and about 3 feet past the top of the stairs. It's hard to describe the layout! But the bedroom door is somewhat inset from the hall, and that's where she was sitting, wanting the door to open I'm assuming. She was snuffling along the crack at the bottom of it anyway. I think that's why it surprised me the way it did. That, and the fact of her eyes lighting up, as someone said as though she finally associated that particular noise with one particular object Anyways! Tested her repeatedly tonight She can apparently hear higher pitched noises, like you'd mentioned, Heather. However- she also responded to hubby and I sitting and talking. Although that could have been coincidence. She does, however, seem to "hear" me when I speak to her in a high pitched voice. At least she'll turn and look at me when I do. Either/or, she has seemed to have regained some hearing, and is really excited when anything registers For that matter- so am I

I have two deaf ferrets and one that's deaf to all but high pitches. When I squeal, he hears that. So I agree with those who said she might be able to hear in that range.

I agree that it's strange that she's now responding to a toy that she previously could not hear. It may b possible that the squeaker in the to has either worn or shifted inside the toy to emit a different range of sound thus hitting a noise range that lucrezia can feel? She may have also have had a minor, deep infestation of ear mites and/or excess wax that might affect her ability to hear. SHe may be regaining some ear health due to reduction in chronic inflammation in the ears due to overproduction of ear wax??? Did you change anything in her diet? environment? Who knows, but it certainly is cute! -jennifer

Actually, the only change, and that was about 3 months ago now, come to think of it, was the change to include commercial ground in her daily diet. She is the one who's really lazy on eating bones, which is why I did it

I do suppose it's possible she's had an ear wax build up since she was 10-13 weeks old. But whatever the reason(and I've quit trying to understand it ), I'm just happy she now responds to sounds regularly
