I've read that you can buy chicken hearts and other organs at bait shops. Has anyone done this before? I live on the coast so I have quite a few of them around here.
Any experience?

Not a clue. But some of the bait they have ferrets would enjoy. Especially the larva Which is why I'll never walk into one. I get a shiver just thinking about "those" things, let alone seeing them

Definitely worth checking out...my bait shop experience comes from going sturgeon fishing with my grandpa when I was a kid, but I remember seeing all kinds of freaky things. I'd ask about additives though, I remember some things came doused in oils that would be a scent attractant to the fish, but other things didn't...my grandpa would spray the smelt down with wd-40 because apparently sturgeon go nuts for it. At least, we almost always caught one using it .

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I need to find a good Asian market, but I haven't found one that's close yet. I thought bait shops might have some interesting things, and there are a LOT here in FL I will make sure to ask about anything added to the meats. Thanks for the advice guys!

We actually buy from the same supplier that Bitter's Bait and Tackle use! The supplier comes up from the MIA area and we get frozen sardines and mackerel. My brother in law and husband are avid fishermen (they fish but just can't catch!) and they have a minnow trap and cast net so they don't have to pay for bait... if and when they have any live bait left over from a day of fishing they get put in the dogs water bowl ( a huge tupperware salad/mixing bowl) I'll also get a large rectangular pyrex baking dish, fill it with water and put some fish in there for the ferrets to play with, hunt, make a mess, and eat! The only thing I would be really concerned with is if the bait shop added any chemicals to the water that the live bait was living in and if it was safe for all animals.
