I had a bit of a suprise today. I texted my room mate with a joke about making a outside ferret cage like that of a recent chicken coop shown. And he said, " As long as it looks nice. " So...I am just throwing out ideas for something like that for the ferrets to have free range in. Ideas-> Aviation style cages Short open pens

I'm in the same spot you are! My Dad has agreed to help make an outdoor play area for the ferrets come spring... I just have to come up with the idea and pay for the supplies lol

There are a number of us who have play areas that we've constructed for our little ones. It depends on how large, complicated you want to get. I love Marie's outdoor area myself, but it's huge and really an outdoor habitat. It's my aim to eventually create one like that. ciao

This is where my 4 live all the time, unless it gets really hot then I bring them inside. The wire run is 3m long, now with a timber floor and has 8m of pipe to play in, (and I made it by myself too). The crate is their sleeping area with 2 levels, and it also has 2 windows on the right side away from direct sunlight. The roof and tarp walls of the run I can take on or off as the weather allows. The shadecloth hanging on the fence stays there all the time, so I can pull it over all the cage area on warmer days. I made 2 awnings for the crate doors to keep the sun/rain out. All up it cost me about $80. It is a very comfortable home for my fuzzies..

I'm planning on doing an outdoor playpen for my girls. I have a big backyard and I think it'd be perfect for the girls.

I would love to build and out door pen/play area for my three kids.
However is needs to be able to come apart and be put away. My boyfriend and I moved in with my grandparents, there new house has a basement suite. My Grandmother has been ill so we moved in to help take care of her and my boyfriend keeps my grandfather company because due to Grandmothers illness he can't get out much. She gets to worried and scared when she's allow and sometimes she goes many weeks when she can't go out.
So we need a pen that can be taken down so it's not taking up space in the yard when it's not in use and they have underground sprinklers as well so I'd have to move it when the watering happens.
I like the idea foxfire has. And I've seen a few others I really like. But I might just wind up with a tall play pen with a bottom and top cover for a while.

I am staying at my curent residence for no less than 4 yrs. And I'm 6 months down. So it can't be a permant cage by means of concret but I have other ideas. ^.^ I picked those two pictures because I like the roof on pic number 2 but the floor in the first. My thoughts on ferret proofing is to burry cinder blocks ( move able and not perm ), and chicken wire under the blocks up and around to a frame like the ones in the pictures. Cover the frame with rabbit wire. For the roof I could see how much plexi glass guards are vs just wire. The wire would be burried a good 7 inchs or how ever wide the blocks are. The paint will be white to match the front porch. Because they won't be in the cage 24/7 as a cage, It's going to be a garden. A small sand pit, dirt pit, pond, A natural climbing tree, and just let them able to have that out door free time while I chill out by the horses, or on the porch. Plan's need to be written up in ink and supplies figured but I really would love to do this.

I love the "safe entry" box in the 1st photo. Trying to get 1 ferret out of my crate door is always a drama. I have to trick a few to go upstairs while I grab one that is still downstairs.

That IS a good idea for a run. That way, even if they get past you, they don't get out.

He said when we get a house we will put up a large shed and make modifications inorder for it to be a safe house for them to play in- he wants to make a little (enclosed) patio out of the back with a flimsy door like a weak doggy door and he wants to take off the top half of the shed and re-do it with a mesh wireing. We both love to build so it should be a lot of fun, I asked him how in the heck he going to put a door on it for me to come in and out and he said i will just have to wait and see (which means he has no idea yet, lol) we'll figure that out i guess edit: I love those pictures, if you can put that up- it beats my idea out by about a million lol

Is a 2x4 frame too heavy?

Multiple 2X4's would be very heavy, yes, but also very secure

My new Basic plan is as follows.
It will be roughly 4 feet wide, 6 feet long. That's a total of 24 square feet, ( I think ). The fondation will ether Be: Mesh Wire placed 3-4 inchs into the ground and under/around the other side of a boundary of cinder blocks. That way they can dig but can't get out. Or A 2 foot trench, 0.7 from maria's measurement on her natural enclosure and filled with cement blocks.
My room-mates girl freind questioned If I'm ready to lose my first ferret that way. How far down CAN a ferret dig and why hasn't Maria's Weasels gotten out than?
The basic structure may be simple H like contructed sides covered with mesh, with a more fancy support structure for the front with those peices in the corners. I worry about hawks so I will be putting up a mesh top.
Drafts Coming Soon as well as location. If I place it in the yard, It may be the mesh bottom. If it is placed in the woods, I will have to do the big trench version. I actualy like the wood's better because it already provides the natural enviroment, and is the perfect angle to the front gate plus has a natural path. The clearing is only 3-4 feet from the drive way, about 20 from the pool, and 30 from the porch.
