So I would like to have some sort of rack, but my space is very limited, as is my money. I will have more $ soon though as I am working a Lot more this semester. Yaaay! Anyways, I currently have 2 breeding groups. One is just about to go on break as the female is tired (the other female started eating babies so she was eaten and replaced by a new younger female). And one JUST started, and I have a few preggo females that I am going to start a 3rd group with today. I also have all the babies in one big tank and I feed off the males first, but I keep some males that I really like and would like to breed to females. Obviously my entire set up is not ideal - but it works. BUT I want something better!
Anyways, I was considering modifying something like this but I need some help and input on several things.
www.staples.com/Iris-3-drawer-Wide-Organizer-with-Plastic-Top/product_640362?cm_mmc=GoogleBase-_-Shopping-_-Office_Supplies%3ETotes_%26_Drawer_Storage-_-640362-124498&cid=CSE:GoogleBase:Office_Supplies:Totes_%26_Drawer_Storage:640362:124498
I would get a few of them and stack them higher so I could have more, this is just an example.
Anyways, here are my issues...
How to keep them from escaping?
- I was thinking of covering the tops with screen, but how could I attach it, how could I ensure it is easily removable still for cleaning, and would they chew through it?
- Also, perhaps I could build a small wooden frame that fits INSIDE the drawer, with screen stretched across it, and have some way of clamping it? That way there will be less interference with the drawer's ability to slide...
How to attach water bottles?
- I know that they have some water bottles that attach to flat surfaces, but I am not sure of how they attach... like these: www.petco.com/product/11500/Lixit-Quick-Lock-Flat-Sided-Water-Bottles.aspx
But I currently use these: www.petco.com/product/110483/PETCO-Universal-Small-Animal-Water-Bottle.aspx?CoreCat=certona-_-ProductList_Small%20Animal_3-_-PETCO%20Universal%20Small%20Animal%20Water%20Bottle-110483
I'd rather not have to buy all new water bottles, so perhaps if I can find a way to hang the ones I have from the screen at the top or something?
I am leery of drilling any holes as I don't want them to chew their way out.
Also, will they chew holes in the plastic? If there are no bumps or holes for them to start with, would it be safe? What if I drill air holes - will they just chew them bigger and escape? Obviously I want some decently tall drawers, but I can't have too tall as I have very limited floor space, and too tall of a drawer would mean I would not have the number of cages that I need/want.
If I can figure out a way to do this that would be incredibly awesome. Suggestions and ideas please?
