This is my gold little Fancy Mouse, Mirabel. She has ruby eyes.
She is an EXTREMELY clever little girl. Anyone who thinks rats are smarter than all mice should meet her and that mouse on youtube that does agility. For awhile she would take all her wheels apart (in minutes!). They would be completely deconstructed. We couldn't understand how she did it, but now we've gone through different ones and bought her a green Flying Saucer wheel, and though she tries (she pushes up on the disc) she doesn't have the strength to get it apart. She does, however, push it around her "house". (Picture is of old wheel.)
Her veterinarian (a renowned ferret expert, it's funny) recommended we try litter-pan training her because she could see how clever she is. So, we did - and immediately she claimed the litter pan as her own and uses it faithfully. If we give her a sunflower seed as a treat she will take it into her "potty" and throw away the leftover shell when she is done, into her pan. ! She's very clean. (Pic was when she was overweight and is a lil blurry.)
Mirabel has mycoplasma. She receives an antibiotic dose in the morning, and two medicines (antibiotic and painkiller) in the evening. If she didn't receive these medicines she would have died a long time ago due to respiratory difficulty, both of her sisters that we had died at 3-6 months. Mirabel is going on 2 now. When she doesn't get her medicine (and sometimes anyway) she makes chirping noises, lies very still, and struggles to breathe. The vet says this is all we can do, until she gets worse, when we may start putting her in a box and humidifying her medicine.
Some people say this is overkill and that natural selection rules out her need for life, and that she's just a mouse, but when I see her running on her wheel, with a piece of food in her mouth, or begging me to take her out, hold her, and rub her cheek so she can close her eyes in enjoyment - I know they're all full of it. She has a great quality of life and is a very happy little mouse!
