All day he is in his room out of the cage doing what ever he wants. I sleep all day and am up all night, So I get him put between the hours of 9-12 pm being latest and keep him out until about 4 or 5 am. When he is with me for about a hour hell run around then after that he sleeps, right now i have a fur butt cruled up in my lap sleeping away . Should he be this lazy?

Carnivores tend tend to sleep a lot. They need that high energy to hunt. But then they sleep quite a bit. this also varies with different personalities and, to some degree gender. I find the girls tend to be more active (busy bodies) - I've never known a true "couch potato" jill or sprite. But hobs.... .... my Tonto has always been super laid back and lazy . It seems that female carnivores need the extra energy levels to raise their young. Cats are also good at sleeping a lot. I know this true for lions. So, yes, ferrets do sleep a lot. But they should be very active when they are awake. Of course, thee are generalizations. I also have found that my brats started sleeping less and became more active when thet started eating raw as youngsters. -jennifer

He's bored. He needs someone to play with to keep him busy. If he's an only ferret- that means you! Try pulling him on a towel, using a cat teaser. Get him used to a halter, and take him on walks. Wrestle him with a stuffed toy! Get him in the dig box, and sprinkle whatever is in it over him- carefully! Even the mildest ferret can get overexcited and nip without meaning to Here's a link on keeping only ferrets happy and healthy: holisticferret.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talking&action=display&thread=5903

I play with him, and my cats and especally my puppy plays with him. He just gets puckered out and leaves us and lays down to nap . And when he decides to wake up i play with him more. I sometimes try to wake him up and he gets mad at me and goes and curles up somewhere else to sleep!

Sounds like a snuggly male ferret. If you're really concerned that he is sleeping too much, take him to the vet and get him checked up. This will rule out health issues, put your mind at rest and then you can decide what activities you need to do to get your lazy little sod out of bed ciao

I used to have two males a long time ago - they were SO mellow compared to these females. One was more of a loner, the other was super extra cuddly. They had whole roam of the house, could go outside when they wanted to, had dogs and cats to play with, and I took him EVERYWHERE with me but he really just liked snoozing. Especially in weird places I would never in a million years think were comfortable, but there he was... The one that slept more was by far the most content ferret, just totally cool with whatever was going on. He'd play hard, sleep harder. Sometimes he'd tunnel so hard in a pile of mulch that he would just fall asleep mid-tunnel with his bum and tail just hanging out the entrance. I think it's just personality - everyone is different. I have 5 girls, and three are sisters but all 5 are completely different from each other, one of which sleeps most of the day regardless of what's going on.

Compared to the girls, my lone boy is so laid back... Crumb will play for a bit and then sprawl himself out where ever he sees fit and pass out! He's the only boy in my group right now and when I had Thor he was so malnurished that he didn't play much at all mainly slept and eat....towards the end he started to play more but not nearly as much as the girls do!

I know mine are a lot more active if their playtime is more interesting. It's easy to fall into a routine of giving them the same toys/environment. Ferrets get bored with the old quickly and that equals more sleeping. Mine love to go outside and play in the outdoor enclosure and even more love to roam outside on a leash. There are always new sights, smells, and sounds to explore.
If you can't or don't want to have outdoor playtimes, try rotating toys so they seem new and letting him explore (under supervision of course) new areas of the house. Think up new games to play, offer new smells and sounds, see if he'd like to take a swim, get some foraging cups, ect. Anything new (and safe) will get his interest and encourage him to be more active.
Although, as has been stated, in most cases males are lazier than females and ferrets do sleep like 15-20 hours a day. But the more active you get him, the more his endurance will build up and the longer he'll want to play before taking a nap.

Yeah, kind of a shame they don't come with "off" buttons sometimes, isn't it

Yeah, kind of a shame they don't come with "off" buttons sometimes, isn't it Oh how I would Looove an "Off" button for Koda...actually, a whole remote control would be nice. Just think about it...pause (make them stand still for pics), rewind (so you can catch that funny thing they just did on video), STOP (so you don't have to turn them off, but you can stop them in place), slow-mo, volume (turn down the night-time cage rattling!), fast forward....I don't think we'll touch that one haha unless to fast forwards through a temporary illness...or a trouble making phase... *ahem - glares at Koda* Yes, I would like to order one ferret remote please!
