Themes are easy.....we had one going in the photo section not to long ago.....something about weird sleeping positions?? I like fun in the sun thing, or water play... Who hasn't complained about their brats snorkeling in water bowls, bath tubs. I think that if anyone wants to see real water play go take a look at Marie's most recent submission for water theme park My guys would really think they'd found the bridge here on earth if they had a place like that to play in. I find a lot of my guys get their photos taken and then if something comes up I post it. It's really rare that I take a photo with something in particular in mind, but even then why not set something up. If you had pics of furries playing under the sofa we could perhaps a theme of ferrets in cramped spaces or "ferret caves" or something like that and then you would be able to post it. Ferrets on the wild side, pics of our little ones playing outside or even if you have a photo of the furbrats playing in your plant pots...someone posted some pics of a couple their potted plants that had been played with by ferrets. Out of 12 possible months I think we could cover a lot of ground and a lot of themes. If we keep the theme broad based or more open ended then more people can participate. It's just a thought ciao

It's a GOOD thought, though By keeping it much broader based, we do get more participants.

yes, I realize that but if there is a summer theme I am going to have to go out and take new pictures of the fuzz butts on the beach or in the sun or out and about to be able to enter as opposed to being able to send in a great shot of them hiding under the couch or playing together or something non summer related. understand where I'm coming from? If you dont have a picture that fits the theme, dont enter. When you have a picture that fits that months theme, submit it, simple as that! Im sorry you dont have a camera, but thats no reason to not have a themed contest. You cant really have a photo contest without some sort of theme. Whats to judge the pictures against? You submit a cute picture of fuzzies playing under a couch, and someone else has a picture of a cute group of fuzzies naping together... how are you going to judge those pictures together? They're not realted (other than both having ferrets in them, which isnt really specific enough). As for the first theme..... Fun in the sun?, Water Weasels? .....obviously themes didn't work out before or else the photo contests would still be up and running. correct? If we don't have enough people willing to participate in a theme then what are you proposing we do for that month? just judge against 5 pictures? It's not fair to have a theme and not be able to enter just because I'm lacking in a decent camera even though I have about a dozen cute themeless images of my ferrets. Yes, it is possible to enter a picture of napping ferrets against another picture of napping ferrets- then you choose the photo based on photo quality, position of the camera and the fuzzies and which one is the better photo in general. then when themes come into it you start judging more on the background. Let's say the theme is fall. you have a decent picture of a ferret sitting in a pile of leaves and a fantastic close up of a fuzzy sitting in the sun. Which picture is going to win? The one of the ferret in a pile of leaves because it represents the theme better, NOT because it was the better photo.

Zoologist, the reason it didn't work out previously was the theme was eating raw/whole prey in a Xmas type setting. I know I couldn't get that done. I tried They were far more interested in the new decorations around them than they were in the chicken hearts in front of them This time around, we are hoping to keep everything much more loosely based than something extremely specific to this forum. Such as...instead of the above, we'd have ferrets in snow, to show winter enrichment, etc.

Looks like we got our 10 participants. I'll work on the contest details after I get back from my vacation on the 19th and well have our first contest starting next month (September).

Yaaaaay I am excited! I like a summery theme for the first one...here are a few theme ideas: Hide and Seek (ferrets under a couch?) Water Weasels (just seconding this one of course ) Fun in the Sun Ferrets Outside War Dance pictures Favorite Toy (pics of your ferrets with their toys) Stash-mania (pictures of the Stash pile, and the ferrets, or of ferrets stashing things) lol that one might be tough Maybe if this takes off well enough, we could do a few special categories in the future: like adrenal and Waardenberg babies to give them a spacial chance to shine too. Just an idea. Can't wait for the contest!

I really would love to participate in this. Please consider taking on one or two more contestants.

Oh, it's not limited to 10! That was the minimum needed to get it started up again

I'd join in, too! I have so many hilarious outtakes from work I wish I could use. I would say you wouldn't believe how many tries it takes even a professional to get a great shot, but any ferret owner would believe it very easily indeed

If it helps, I agree that putting broader themes brings in more participants. I have seen photo contests that have failed because they call for pics that no one really can get. You will find yourself with a lot more participants if you call for images that people can just dig in their photo album and find.
If you find yourself with too many entries and you're getting swamped, tighten the theme a little bit to make the competition smaller. Once you get your people who support the contest regularly, you can make the themes harder and they will still be involved with it.
